Job Description

Position Purpose: 

Provides a day-to-day monitoring and operations of all wastewater equipment at the plant and stations. Inspects and performs mechanical troubleshooting to determine repairs needed.

Primary Duties/Responsibilities: 

  • Operates equipment manually and through instrument panels, computer terminals and programmable logic control units associated with wastewater facilities. This includes but is not limited to VFD’s, SCADA, flow meters, gauges, and related controls on instrument panels.
  • Performs field tests (chemical. physical and biological) in order to pace chemical dosages for process and odor control units or alter unit processes.
  • Monitors and observes operating conditions. Records observations and data in shift log.
  • Performs routine calibrations for portable meters including, but not limited to dissolved oxygen, pH, and scales.
  • Diagnoses basic operational problems and takes corrective action. Communicates status changes and abnormalities in operating areas.
  • Follows process control procedures for assigned areas.  Verifies and reports suspected malfunctions and to the supervisor.
  • Creates and closes out preventative and corrective maintenance work orders in the CMMS Program (Job Cal Plus) that is owned by the Town of Rockland
  • Prepares chemical solutions, monitors process chemical supplies and recommends reorder.
  • Sample wastewater and sludge according to schedule.
  • Performs maintenance including routine preventive maintenance, lubrication, minor adjustments and basic troubleshooting of equipment.   Recommends solutions and fills out work orders. 
  • May assist with maintaining parts, spares, and maintenance inventory
  • Operates and maintains project vehicles.
  • Assist the town in any sewer collection projects.
  • Mark out any sewer dig safes that have been called in.
  • Follow all Company Life Safety Rules.
  • Assured work is performed in a safe and professional manner by following established safety, operating and emergency response procedures.
  • Completes all required safety classes assigned by the company.
  • Performs cleanup and housekeeping tasks for the main building (lunchroom, bathrooms, offices, hallways, and lab, etc.), tools, equipment, vehicles, and grounds.
  • Performs other operational duties such as running lab analysis and operating the belt filter press.
  • On Call, working holidays and weekends are on a rotational schedule.
  • All outside work including but not limited to snow removal, salting, mowing grass, and weed trimming.

Work Environment: 

  • Requires working in outside and inside environments with noise and all temperature conditions.
  • Must be able to work under adverse weather conditions for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

Education/Experience/Background: 

  • High school or GED with the ability to read, write, and be able to carry out verbal and written instructions.
  • Three to Five years of experience in a related position in a similar environment.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities: 

  • Ability to perform basic math calculations.
  • Ability to interpret and record data from meters, gauges, scales, panels, computer consoles, and other equipment.
  • Must demonstrate a working ability to use computer programs.
  • Must be able to inspect and diagnose process problems.
  • Requires working knowledge of the methods, techniques, principles, and practices of wastewater treatment as acquired through three years of experience.
  • Requires ability to diagnose problems within the scope of work with process and equipment knowledge.
  • Must have the ability to establish effective working relationships with other employees and the willingness to assume additional or new responsibilities readily.

Required Certification/Licenses/Training: 

  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and a safe driving record.
