Senior Cloud Engineer 

JOB SUMMARY 

The Senior Cloud Engineer plays a critical role in designing, implementing, and maintaining cloud-based solutions to meet the organization's strategic objectives. This position is responsible for architecting scalable, reliable, and secure cloud infrastructure, as well as optimizing existing cloud environments for performance and cost-efficiency. The Senior Cloud Engineer will lead cloud-related initiatives, collaborate with cross-functional teams, and stay abreast of emerging cloud technologies and best practices.

As a member of the IT Solutions team, the Senior Cloud Engineer is expected to uphold the division’s mission to “empower an agile, digital university and elevate technology as a strategic institutional asset” and contribute positively to a collaborative, human-centered, innovative, accountable, transparent, and inclusive culture within ITS.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to:      Manager, Platforms & Cloud Services 

Supervises:     No supervisory responsibilities

ESSENTIAL DUTIES - May include, but not limited to the following:

Cloud/Systems Management/ Architecture & Design (65%)

  1. Designs and implements cloud infrastructure solutions in accordance with best practices and organizational requirements.
  2. Architects highly available, scalable, and fault-tolerant cloud environments to support business-critical applications and services.
  3. Collaborates with stakeholders to gather requirements, define cloud migration strategies, and develop technical architectures.
  4. Conducts cloud assessments and provide recommendations for optimizing performance, security, and cost-effectiveness.
  5. Deploys and configures cloud services and resources across multiple cloud platforms, such as AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, or others.
  6. Serves as primary POC for Oracle Cloud infrastructure connections, instance sizing, coordinate support tickets with Oracle and be primary source of troubleshooting integration.
  7. Automates provisioning, configuration, and management tasks using infrastructure as code (IaC) tools and frameworks (e.g., Terraform, CloudFormation).
  8. Monitors cloud infrastructure, applications, and services for performance, availability, and security incidents.
  9. Implements and manages cloud security controls, identity and access management (IAM), encryption, and network security.
  10. Optimizes cloud costs by right-sizing resources, leveraging reserved instances, and implementing cost allocation and reporting mechanisms.
  11. Familiarity with Microsoft technologies (AADC, GPO, Azure, Azure MFA, O365, Exchange, Mail Relay, Sites and Services, Extended attributes, etc.), Google, and AWS.
  12. Manages and optimizes all assigned on-premises and cloud resources.
  13. Plans and implements new cloud technology initiatives.
  14. Manages and monitors all cloud systems and infrastructure.
  15. Designs, configures, tests, and maintains cloud systems and management tools.
  16. Proactively ensures the highest levels of systems and infrastructure availability.
  17. Monitors and tests system performance for potential bottlenecks, identifies possible solutions and works with stakeholders to implement those fixes.
  18. Designs and maintains security, backup, and redundancy strategies.
  19. Writes and maintains custom scripts to increase system efficiency and lower the human intervention time on any tasks.
  20. Creates, manages, and documents hardware and software requirements, objectives, deliverables, and specifications on a project-by-project basis.
  21. Develops and evaluates cloud and systems specifications and coordinates the design of information and operational support systems.
  22. Provides high-quality  and timely systems support, including responding to incident/problem tickets and troubleshooting errors and issues with systems infrastructure.
  23. Evaluates, recommends, plans, and implements hardware and software upgrades, updates, and security patches.
  24. Ensures all support tickets assigned are resolved in a timely manner and to standard.

Technical Innovation & Project Leadership (25%)

  1. Serves as a subject matter expert on cloud technologies and solutions, providing guidance and mentorship to team members.
  2. Collaborates with cross-functional teams, including developers, architects, operations, and security, to deliver integrated cloud solutions.
  3. Leads cloud-related initiatives, projects, and migrations, ensuring successful outcomes and adherence to project timelines and budgets.
  4. Stays abreast of emerging cloud trends, tools, and best practices, and evaluate their app
