About the Department
 

Accounting Services is a function of Financial Services, which provides critical accounting and finance support to the University. Faculty, staff and the various contracting parties of the University are considered customers of Accounting Services. Under this concept, Accounting Services seeks to provide the highest level of customer service.

Job Summary
 

Prepare, manage, and report on the University's Fixed Assets, Capital Projects, Debt. Review monthly balance sheet reconciliations, prepare quarterly and year-end financial statements. Assist in the implementation of new accounting standards.

Provide advice and counsel to the administrators of departments and divisions on generally accepted accounting practices and University accounting policies regarding capitalization, depreciation, and other accounting topics. Serve as liaison for Financial Services with University Facilities Services, Budget Office and Facilities Services of the Biological Science division.

Responsibilities

• Prepares the University’s consolidated financial statements.
• Prepares quarterly financial statements.
• Prepares year-end workpapers.
• Assists in the implementation of new accounting standards.
• Reviews monthly balance sheet reconciliations.
• Provides analytical support for capital projects of varying complexity.
• Responsible for the accounting and reporting of University's depreciation, capitalization of land, buildings, and books in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles.
• Oversees the accounting activities of the construction projects, to ensure timely and accurate reporting of all transactions in accordance with Universities procedures and policies.
• Analyzes capital project requests for completeness, accuracy, and conformance with established procedures, regulations, and organizational policies.
• Monitors the budget and funding of the capital projects by reviewing reports and accounting records to determine if the allocated capital funds are being spent appropriately, reports on variances between the approved budget and actual spending.
• Produces specific reports and analysis for various types of data used by Financial Services senior staff.
• Supervises and trains staff in the performance of their duties.
• Analyzes recent accounting pronouncement changes and documents the impact of those changes on University operations, processes, polices and/or procedures.
• Provides assistance to the overall accounting and financial reporting team for special projects as needed.
• This is a temporary position that is expected to last until June 2024 with the possibility of extension based on mutual agreement.
• Uses specialized knowledge and breadth of experience to perform a variety of complex operating or cost accounting activities, incorporating accounting theories and principles.
• Recommends methods for improved operations.
• Performs other related work as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
 

Education:

Minimum requirements include a college or university degree in related field.

Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline.

Experience:

• Higher education accounting experience.
• Capital projects
• Training other staff.

Certifications:

• CPA.

Working Conditions

• This is a part-time position of approximately 24 hours per week.
• This is a temporary position of approximately 6-8 months, with the possibility of extension based on mutual agreement.
