Tech Staff
MIT Lincoln LaboratoryAbout the role
The Electronics for Contested Space Group develops radio-frequency (RF) and advanced electronic systems for space control missions and technology in the protection of our nation’s most important space capabilities. This work includes the design and development of state-of-the-art satellites and satellite payloads, novel concepts for resilient space architectures, and the nation’s most sensitive radars, optics, and passive RF systems. Our group also collaborates across the Laboratory to provide engineering rigor and experience to some of the most critical Laboratory programs. Examples of recent projects include the prototyping of electronic systems and effects, hardware-in-the-loop testing of tactically relevant payloads with surrogate threat systems, and RF subsystem development for satellites.
Position Description
An Embedded Systems Architect is needed to assist with the design, development and build of systems to support laboratory/field testing with ground, airborne and space-based sensors. The ideal candidate is self-driven, has effective communication skills and is comfortable working with fellow engineers to create complete end-to-end systems. Additionally, the candidate will work in multi-disciplinary teams leading the embedded development sub-task. The candidate will also be expected to execute technical research. Occasional domestic travel to support field exercises may be required.
Applicants must have significant coursework and/or experience in at least one of the following areas: RF systems, digital (FPGA-based) circuits and/or embedded systems. Previous experience with run time optimization, system architecture design, and integration of hardware and software is desirable. Experience with laboratory/field test equipment (spectrum analyzers, digital oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, etc.) is desirable.
Requirements
M.S. in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or another relevant technical field with 8 years of relevant experience. A B.S. and at least 10 years of relevant experience will be considered.
- Demonstrated ability to lead small teams and interact with others respectfully and develop productive working relationships
- Demonstrated proficiency in oral and written communication
- Expertise in embedded systems development process from requirements capture through final test and selloff
- Experience decomposing processing chains into component modules for development
- Experience developing synthesizable VHDL, Verilog, and/or SystemVerilog
- Laboratory experience, including interface debugging and verification, at the circuit card assembly level
- Hardware familiarity, including reading schematics, data sheets and app notes
- Digital signal processing experience in either analysis and/or implementation
Desired Skills
- Expertise in computer architecture, particularly with respect to making trades between bare-metal, or real-time operating systems
- Ability to operate in a Linux development environment
- Familiarity with scripting and task automation
- Familiarity with MATLAB, Python, C/C++ or other scientific programming languages
- Experience working with modern development best practices, including use of revision control
- Hardware design experience, including schematic capture, layout, routing and initial bring up
- Experience implementing FPGA designs in hardware, including the creation of constraint files
- Familiarity with Xilinx FPGA Family, in particular the RFSoC and Ultrascale lines
- Experience with Xilinx’s Vivado and PetaLinux toolchains
- Software defined radio experience
