Summary:

In addition to the job duties of Field Investigator (Mechanical Trades), the Mechanical Field Supervisor is to supervise the Field Investigators in the Mechanical Trade Division.  In addition to the Field Investigator job qualifications, the Mechanical Trade Field Supervisor is to demonstrate they are qualified to supervise Field Staff as required below.

Typical Functions:

• Manages and directs Mechanical Trade Division of the CIB.

• Maintains consistent communication with Mechanical Field Investigators to coordinate activities, manage workload, and optimize efficiency in time and agency resource utilization.  Establishes performance goals, identifies and acquires resources, and obtains approval as necessary.  Assigns work, establishes schedules, and monitors, reviews and evaluates results, providing guidance and instruction when necessary.  Consults with staff to determine laws, codes, and appropriateness of citations.  Assist employees with administrative conferences and hearings.

• Reviews and approves Mechanical Field Investigator time reports, Travel Logs/Activity Logs, for accuracy and compliance.  Completes time reports, activity logs, and travel reports timely and via computer.

• Collaborates with agency leadership to direct field investigator work activities in assigned areas of responsibility. 

• Provides mentorship, coaching, and constructive performance feedback to field investigators; completes Performance Management Process (PMP’s).

• Reviews licensure examination applications to verify qualifications, training and determining eligibility for licensure examination.  Contacts employers to verify employment and level of work.  Reviews continuing education applications for completeness and inclusion of agenda, curriculum and instructor resume, and for compliance with administrative rules including: comparing number of hours on agenda to credit requested and reviewing online courses; contacts the provider for clarification. Reviews and approves committee agenda before final approvals.

• Provides and presents Mechanical Trade Division data at trade committee meetings and CIB Board meetings. 

• Helps interpret meaning of codes and laws within agency parameters; responds to requests from trade members and the public. Gives agency standard technical advice concerning code requirements and licensing acts and coordinates with local inspectors concerning code requirements. Researches and understands applicable rules, laws, regulations, codes and other relevant topics to conduct thorough and accurate inspections or investigations. Conducts inspections and investigations according to agency standards and ensures timely completion of all follow-up activities.

• Prepares reports of inspections and violations.  Maintains log on quantity of complaints received.  Completes forms.  Develops work plan, organizational activities and agency programs, including goal setting, utilization of resources, and scheduling.  Produces written memorandums, letters and other communications as required.

• Participates in meetings for development of trade certificate examinations and trade curriculum development.  Serves as judge in educational institution competitions.  Attends trade-related meetings, career fairs, trade shows.  Speaks to various organizations, both trade and non-trade related.  Provides limited proctoring of written exams.

• Provides identification at job site.  Checks workers’ licenses or registration; identifies employers.  Determines ratio of apprentices to licensed workers.
