Software Engineer (Backend), Square for Retail

Since we opened our doors in 2009, the world of commerce has evolved immensely, and so has Square. After enabling anyone to take payments and never miss a sale, we saw sellers stymied by disparate, outmoded products and tools that wouldn’t work together.

To solve this problem, we expanded into software and built integrated solutions to help sellers sell online, manage inventory, book appointments, engage loyal buyers, and hire and pay staff. Job Description

You Will: 

• Deliver highly impactful tools for our growing base of Retail sellers to manage and understand their inventory.
• Build, test, and ship end-to-end features in a large microservice architecture.
• Work with a world-class team of experienced and dedicated engineers and designers.
• Create and maintain technical systems and write concise, well-organized code with sensible tests.
• Achieve the levels of reliability and correctness that merchants and buyers expect when they entrust Square with their financial and business information.
• Collaborate across teams in an agile environment to deliver solutions that solve complex business problems.

Qualifications

You Have: 

• 2+ years of software engineering experience developing scalable production software and an excellent command of engineering fundamentals.
• Curiosity, and a desire to learn and teach.
• Openness to continuing to grow your breadth and depth.
• Eagerness to share your own ideas, and openness to those of others.
• Unwavering commitment to customer experience and the quality of your work.
• Empathy for your customers and colleagues.
• Experience with server technologies.
• Experience with Go or Java is helpful, but not required.

Additional Information

Block takes a market-based approach to pay, and pay may vary depending on your location. U.S. locations are categorized into one of four zones based on a cost of labor index for that geographic area. The successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Zone A: USD $152,100 - USD $185,900
Zone B: USD $144,500 - USD $176,700
Zone C: USD $136,900 - USD $167,300
Zone D: USD $129,300 - USD $158,100

This role is also eligible to participate in Block's equity plan subject to the terms of the applicable plans and policies, and may be eligible for a sign-on bonus.
