Health Care Affairs Research Fellow

The Association of American Medical Colleges is a not-for-profit association dedicated to transforming health care by supporting the entire spectrum of medical education, medical research, patient care, and community collaborations conducted by our member institutions. Why Us, Why Now?  

 

This is a part-time position that requires 20 hours of work per week. Fellows have the choice of receiving academic credit from their home institution or being paid an hourly rate of $25.74 per hour by AAMC. 

 

Fellowship Research and Resources  

 

Currently we are looking for fellows whose research interest and/or background falls in the following topic areas, although other related research topics and questions may also be considered:  

• Health economics, hospital finance, Medicare payment policies, and payment adequacy 

• Mental and behavioral health and access to care 

• Social determinants of health and health-related social needs as they relate to the role of hospitals and health systems 

• Measurement of quality of care 

• Medical innovation and payment policy 

• Hospitals and health systems’ transition to value-based care 

• Utilization trends of health services, such as ambulatory visits and Part B drugs 

 

Fellows may use public data or AAMC data, alone or in combination. Key datasets that candidates may use for their research during the fellowship include:  

• De-identified Medicare or other claims data 

• Hospital and physician survey data 

• Patient and consumer survey data 

• Medicare hospital cost reports 

• Medicare public use files 

 

 

How will you make an impact?  

 

For their main research project, the fellow will develop a research manuscript as well as related and intermediate products. This process will require the fellow to: 

• Conduct literature reviews. 

• Consult with experts throughout AAMC. 

• Apply for IRB approval. 

• Conduct or assist with statistical analysis and production of tables, graphs and other visualizations. 

• Prepare and deliver a formal presentation of the research and results.  

• Carry on the research projects independently with minimal direction. 

• Contribute to overall HCA research efforts, including through independent quantitative and/or qualitative research and policy analysis. 

• Provide other research and data analysis support to the HCA data team as appropriate. 

• Attendance at relevant seminars, symposia and relevant internal AAMC meetings.
