Founded in 1925, Random House is the proud publishing house of many of the world’s most acclaimed storytellers, thought leaders, and innovators. Our host of imprints publish original fiction and nonfiction in all formats with the mission to entertain, educate, and inspire readers for generations.
We are currently seeking a Publicity Assistant to join the Random House publicity department, and support a Director and Deputy Director on both publicity campaigns for titles and departmental work for the Random House, Hogarth, Dial, and Modern Library imprints. Authors these publicists work with include Elizabeth Strout, George Saunders, Hanif Abdurraqib, Téa Obreht, Ibram X. Kendi, Curtis Sittenfeld, Brené Brown, David Mitchell, Gary Shteyngart, Taffy Brodesser-Akner, Cathy Park Hong, Mariana Enriquez, Namwali Serpell, Ann Napolitano, and Daniel Mason, among others. This position provides an intensive education in trade book publishing in an energetic, exciting, and highly collaborative environment.
Responsibilities include:
Assist in carrying out high-impact publicity campaigns for books in a variety of genres, notably literary fiction, narrative non-fiction, memoir, cultural criticism, as well as big ideas and social issues. The Publicity Assistant will work with a wide array of award-winning, bestselling novelists, journalists, and newsmakers. This is an ideal position for a curious, confident, and self-motivated person who loves books across genres as much as they love details, has experience with time and project management, and is energized by a fast-paced environment. The candidate should have an interest in the media and be eager to learn how to execute publicity strategy.
The position of publicity assistant at Random House is a hybrid position with in-office responsibilities, which include but are not limited to mailings, media clippings, maintaining office supplies, and escorting authors to events and media. We will consider candidates who can work from a commutable distance to our offices at 1745 Broadway in New York.

Day-to-day tasks will include:
- Responding in a timely manner to a variety of communication from media, authors, agents, booksellers, and communicating between related in-house departments.
- Drafting publicity materials, including galley letters, press releases, and pitches.
- Providing general and departmental administrative support, such as seasonal data entry related to publicity efforts and expense reporting, etc.
- Performing online research to acquire publicity contacts and updating media lists and internal documents.
- Handling detailed media schedules for campaigns and liaising with bookstores for author events.
- Coordinating travel and hotel arrangements for major author tours.
- Coordinating and executing galley and review copy mailings from the office and remotely.
- Gathering and organizing press clips and data entry related to communicating media hits to other teams.
- Processing invoices, maintaining title budgets on supervisor’s campaigns, and helping with data entry related to department budgets.
- Coordinating logistics for meetings, including securing conference rooms and setting up meetings, coordinating calendar schedules, preparing meeting materials, and taking notes.
The Essentials:
- Strong interest in book publishing, publicity, and media relations, and in books across genres
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Self-starter who takes initiative and possesses a proactive approach to work
- Ability to juggle priorities in a deadlines-driven environment
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Outlook and Excel, internet research
- Interest in literary fiction a plus
The salary for this position is $48,000. All positions are currently eligible for annual profit award or bonus, subject to Company results.
