Job Purpose/Scope:
Supervisor responsible to manufacture zinc/alloyed zinc strip by supervising staff to organize and monitor workflow and material inventories for all activities of the Primary department in accordance with safety & environmental guidelines and standard operating procedures to provide consistent product quality that meets product specifications and customer requirements
Job Duties/Responsibilities:
Essential Functions
15% Maintains safe and clean work environment by educating and directing personnel on the use of all control points, equipment, PPE, and resources; maintaining compliance with established policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements. Participates in and encourages employees to achieve the goals of the company behavioral-based safety program.
15% Operates all exhaust units and bag house collection systems; manages all waste materials and containers related to Primary Dept. operations in accordance with Jarden Zinc Products, State of Tennessee, and Federal regulatory requirements.
35% Accomplishes manufacturing results by meeting production schedules and delivery requirements by communicating job expectations; planning, monitoring, and auditing job results; training, coaching, counseling, and disciplining employees; facilitating quality processes, meeting product specifications, and customer requirements; initiating, coordinating, and enforcing systems, policies, and procedures. Schedule’s workforce in accordance with the union agreement, including first step of the grievance process.
30% Oversee Primary Dept. operations, schedule staffing requirements, adhere to Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) principles to maximize equipment availability, and apply data-driven problem solving for all operating equipment and processes. Apply Lean Manufacturing principles to maintain workflow, minimize Work-In-Process inventory, utilize, and monitor Standard Work practices, apply control and response plans, audit key process variables, and maintain visual measurement and control systems. Engage and participate in process improvement and cost reduction projects using Statistical Process Control (SPC) and Design of Experiments (DOE).
Promote teamwork and communication fostering a spirit of cooperation within and between departments.
5% Prioritize activities across all shifts especially in areas of high importance by documenting all shift activities.
Secondary Functions
• Ensures the proper unloading, segregation and stacking in designated areas of incoming spelter.
• Supervises the charging, alloying, fluxing, and skimming of furnaces to optimize utilization.
• Supervises the operation of annealing oven, 4-Hi mills, United Mill and Primary slitting operations to maximize efficient coil production.
• Assures employees are properly trained for job related functions (including but not limited to job specific training, TQM, ISO 9002, computer systems, etc.).
Knowledge/Experience/Skills:
Knowledge
1. High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience
1. Basic computer knowledge a plus: Familiarity with various PC applications (Word processing, spreadsheets, databases, mail, etc.)
2. Familiarity with operation of the primary department including the furnace, alloy ratios, chemical composition, specification charts and quality charts helpful.
3. Experience with material inventory (location, identification) helpful.
