Description
The School of Kinesiology at the University of Michigan invites applications for a non-tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Clinical Assistant or Clinical Associate Professor, ideally commencing in August 2026. We are seeking colleagues with exceptional experience in social-behavioral science of physical activity who are dedicated to mentoring learners with effective pedagogy. In our Applied Exercise Science program, we train students to apply the science of physical activity to develop solutions for vexing and emerging challenges in a complex and rapidly changing world.
The ideal candidate will have expertise in social and behavioral aspects of physical activity, demonstrated through research or practical experience. This includes behavior change, psychosocial and motivational determinants of physical activity, intervention development and evaluation, technology-enabled physical activity promotion, social or community influences, policy and environmental approaches, health coaching, and physical activity across multiple populations and settings. A successful candidate will be able to teach core undergraduate courses, including Environmental & Policy Approaches to Increasing Physical Activity, Physical Activity Across the Lifespan, Social Factors Influencing Physical Activity, and Design & Evaluation of Physical Activity Interventions. They will also contribute to the development of relevant elective courses for undergraduate and graduate students.
The ideal candidate will provide innovative pedagogical approaches, the ability to facilitate student experiential learning, and mentor graduate student instructors (GSIs). The 9-month appointment involves 75% teaching responsibilities and 25% engagement in administration, service, and scholarship during the fall and winter terms. Administrative responsibilities will be based on the program’s needs, as well as the candidate's expertise and prior experience. Engagement in professional scholarship and participation in departmental, university, and/or community service is expected. The selected candidate will participate in curricular development initiatives, attend faculty meetings, and serve as a mentor as assigned, as well as on other school or campus committees.

In 2021, the school moved into a newly renovated, state-of-the-art academic and research building (School of Kinesiology Building) that is located in the heart of the University of Michigan’s main campus. The $120M renovation project expands the School of Kinesiology’s research, classroom, and office space to approximately 189,000 gross sq. ft. The new building also includes state-of-the-art facilities to support teaching and research, including dedicated lecture and laboratory classrooms, along with many other research laboratories and centers. The shared exercise and clinical research space includes examination and procedure rooms as well as a full exercise center.
