About the role

Overview

Responsible for the day-to-day services provided by the Pharmacy Department. Plans, organizes, and monitors all operational activities under the direction of the Director. Trains, schedules, manages, monitors, and provides appropriate feedback to technicians and pharmacists. Ensures compliance with policies/procedures and department and Medical Center goals.

Responsibilities

  • All responsibilities of a Clinical Pharmacist:
  • Consistently demonstrates a close and empathetic understanding of pharmacists / technician’s responsibilities and schedule on all shifts.

  • Staffs clinical pharmacist positions when necessary.

 

  • Human Resources
  • Develops, implements and manages the orientation of new employees.
  • Develops, implements and manages Core and On-Going competency training.
  • Develops, implements and manages clinical education programs for the staff, and other allied health professionals.
  • Monitors staff’s performance associated with productivity and quality.
  • Provides appropriate constructive feedback routinely and during the annual performance appraisal.
  • Prepares and monitors the schedule to ensure that there is appropriate staffing, fair rotation and within budgetary guidelines.
  • Promotes engagement, teamwork and is a role model for the staff on all shifts.

 

  • Strategic Leadership
  • Continually evaluates clinical practices for improvement.
  • Utilizes best standards of practice and staff input to develop new initiatives and to improve current processes.
  • Provides recommendations as to staff, capital and operational expenses.
  • Effectively collaborates with colleagues from AHS to improve programs and implement new initiatives.
  • Works effectively with the operational pharmacy resources to promote comprehensive pharmacy care.
  • Develops and oversees key clinical pharmacy programs such as but not limited to Antimicrobial Steward and Opioid Stewardship.

 

  • Management
  • Monitors daily clinical processes to ensure that pharmacy services are provided in an accurate and timely manner.
  • Provides direction and support to the staff in emergent situations and when operationally needed.
  • Assists and is the primary back up to the Pharmacy Director.
  • Leads, manages, supports and provides appropriate feedback to the clinical pharmacists.

 

  • Quality / Performance Improvement
  • Actively participates in quality and performance improvement initiatives in the department and in conjunction with AHS colleagues.
  • Utilizes CQI, Project Management & Lean Sigma tools to address issues and opportunities.
  • Develops and utilizes business metrics and key performance indicators to demonstrate trends and successes.
  • Monitors clinical performance metrics for the department and individuals. Identifies opportunities for improvement and implements evidence based best practices.

 

  • Regulatory / Professional Standards
  • In conjunction with the Director, develops, implements, and ensures compliance with policy and procedures and SOPs.
  • Keeps current and ensures compliance with regulatory and professional standards.
  • Identifies vulnerabilities and makes recommendations on how to improve it.
  • Benchmarks and networks with colleagues in the industry to ensure pharmacy services meets or exceeds the needs of our patient population.

 

Qualifications

  • PharmD
  • Master’s in management preferred
  • 3 years of Hospital experience
  • Pharmacist License in the state of New Jersey
  • Strong professional, organizational and interpersonal skills to effectively relate with all members of the healthcare team and patients.
  • Proficiency in Word® and Excel®.
  • Excellent Project Management and Lean Sigma skills.
  • Works in a normal hospital environment with frequent exposure to sick or injured patients.
  • Must be mobile and able to work in patient care areas including patient’s rooms.
  • Must be able to work in the IV Room with appropriate garbing to prepare medications.
  • Must be able to work independently and as a team.
