About the Role

We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Lead, Payroll Specialist to join our myHR Services Team. Reporting to the Sr. Payroll Manager, in this role you will serve as the subject matter expert for all payroll operations, ensuring accurate and timely processing of payroll for our employees while mentoring team members and driving process improvements. This is a key leadership role that bridges operational execution with strategic payroll management. This role thrives in a fast-paced, evolving environment where priorities shift, and adaptability is essential.

Key Responsibilities

Payroll Processing & Operations

  • Lead end-to-end payroll processing for a multi-state (or global) workforce, ensuring 100% accuracy and on-time delivery for all pay cycles (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly)
  • Review, audit, and approve payroll data including new hires, terminations, salary changes, bonuses, overtime, and deductions
  • Reconcile payroll accounts and resolve discrepancies in a timely manner
  • Manage off-cycle payroll runs, manual checks, and adjustments as needed

Compliance & Reporting

  • Ensure payroll practices are compliant with federal, state, and local wage and hour laws, tax regulations, and company policies
  • Oversee year-end payroll activities including W-2/1099 preparation and filing
  • Prepare and submit payroll-related tax filings and ensure timely remittance
  • Generate standard and ad-hoc payroll reports for Finance, HR, and senior leadership

Team Leadership & Collaboration

  • Partner closely with and provide direct support to the Sr. Payroll Manager, including preparing reports, analysis, and recommendations to inform strategic decisions
  • Provide day-to-day guidance, training, and mentorship to the payroll team while providing flexible support across a wide range of payroll and HR initiatives as directed.
  • Serve as the primary point of escalation for complex payroll inquiries from employees and managers
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with HR, Benefits, Finance, and IT teams to ensure data integrity across systems
  • Delegate tasks and manage workload distribution within the payroll team

Process Improvement & Systems

  • Identify opportunities to streamline and automate payroll workflows to improve efficiency and reduce error rates
  • Lead or participate in payroll system implementations, upgrades, and integrations
  • Develop and maintain payroll policies, procedures, and standard operating documentation

Qualifications

Required

  • 8+ years of progressive payroll experience, with at least 1–2 years in a lead or senior-level role
  • Multi-state payroll expertise: Demonstrated experience processing payroll across multiple states
  • Regulatory knowledge: Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local payroll tax laws and regulations
  • Payroll systems proficiency: Experience with platforms such as ADP Workforce Now and ADP Vantage
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills: Pivot tables, VLOOKUPs, and data validation
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to meet strict deadlines

Preferred

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Human Resources, or a related field
  • Certified Payroll Professional (CPP) designation
  • Experience with global or international payroll processing
  • Familiarity with equity compensation payroll (RSUs, stock options)
  • Experience working in a high-growth or publicly traded company environment
