The Materials Engineering Department (NE-SW), which functions within the Mechanical Products Team, is looking for a thermal analysis engineer with hands on experience using thermal analysis instrumentation for chemical and non-metal applications to join our team. This position will offer a qualified candidate the opportunity to ensure thermal analysis equipment operational efficacy through instrumental analysis troubleshooting, characterization and maintenance in addition to performing hands-on thermal analysis testing of materials including adhesives, polymers, tapes, composites, and various other production materials. The role will support all phases of product life cycle (including design, development and production) for a multitude of programs. Analyses will cover a wide range of topics from material characterization, development, process improvement, obsolescence, and failure analysis. Tasks will require careful attention to detail, fundamental scientific and material knowledge, project management skills, knowledge of thermal analysis instrumentation operation and interpretation of results, chemistry laboratory skills, testing of materials, and documentation of results. Collaboration with engineers, subject matter experts, and suppliers is required. Candidate must be able to manage and coordinate a wide variety of simultaneous tasks within set schedule requirements. This candidate will become part of a multi-disciplined team.

 

What You Will Do:

  • Assessing materials based on conformance to specifications

  • Conducting hands on testing of materials using a variety of laboratory techniques and instrumentation

  • Conduct testing, maintenance, trouble shooting and interpretation of results using standard thermal analysis instrumentation including: TGA, DSC, DMA, TMA, Rheology, Thermal Conductivity

  • Conducting standard chemical analysis laboratory testing using a verity of instrumentation including: FTIR, SEM-EDS, GC-MS, LC, NMR

  • Method and test plan development

  • Leading various characterization and design projects

  • Following standard written protocols and utilizing a variety of databases

  • Reviewing material documentation and assessment of specifications

  • Engagement with subject matter experts and management to understand material usage

  • Consistent engagement with engineers, subject matter experts and management to provide project status updates

  • Travel to and engagement with suppliers to support production efforts and product quality control

  • Documentation and communication of results and findings

Qualifications You Must Have:

  • Typically requires a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry and a minimum of 8 years of prior relevant experience. In absence of a degree, 12+ years of experience. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for additional years of experience

  • Experience with using standard laboratory equipment (ovens, thermometers, calipers, and microscope)

  • Experience with calibrating, maintaining, troubleshooting and operating thermal analysis instrumentation (ie: TGA, DSC, DMA, TMA, Rheology, Thermal Conductivity, etc.)

  • Experience with Analytical Chemistry and Instrumental Analysis, including Infrared Spectroscopy, Chromatography and Thermal Analysis (ie: FTIR, GCMS, HPLC, GPC, etc..)

  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
