About Us
WattTime is the secretariat of Climate TRACE, a coalition of over 150 nonprofits, tech companies, universities, and individual researchers pooling their expertise in AI, remote sensing, and emissions data to collectively begin measuring the greenhouse gas emissions of every major emitting facility worldwide. In November 2024 we completed this goal, and are moving beyond simply measuring emissions to providing data-driven recommendations for how institutions can reduce these emissions.
WattTime is a non-profit tech start-up with deep experience in using data to drive emissions reductions at scale and help implement those reductions. Our best known innovation is Automated Emissions Reduction (AER), a data-driven emissions-reducing technique currently used by over 900 million devices daily (e.g. all Nest thermostats, U.S. iPhones, Toyota EVs, etc.) to cut their carbon footprints by using energy when the grid is cleanest. We also develop and share other techniques, like our Emissionality technology, which we have used to slash 50 million tons of CO2 by multiplying the impact of renewable energy projects.
About the Role
As a member of Climate TRACE’s Data Out team, you will play a leading role in ensuring that once we have the data, they successfully drive impact. Your number one responsibility will be to support key power users of Climate TRACE data–some of the world’s most influential organizations–in using our data to implement specific emissions-reducing solutions at scale. You will also work on developing case studies to help other organizations replicate these successes. Each month you will work with the latest Climate TRACE data to analyze the data for any new insights, in particular any that make new emissions-reducing solutions possible.
This role requires someone who combines the skills of a consultant, an activist, and a data scientist. You will need to smoothly handle high-stakes interactions in ways that keep key power users happy. But you’ll also need to think deeply about what actions would actually matter most for climate change, and constantly push these users to prioritize impact over other goals. And you’ll need to do so using our ever-expanding database of billions of rows of emissions data and related metadata. This role requires strong interpersonal skills, technical skills handling emissions data at scale, organization, the ability to synthesize complex information into clear, actionable steps, and most of all, a fierce commitment to driving impact.
We will be hiring multiple team members for this team. One team member may be asked to serve as the lead for the Data Out team – please indicate in your application if you are interested in, and believe you are qualified for, these responsibilities.
Responsibilities
Data Analysis: Analyze Climate TRACE’s vast new data each month and distill findings into insights–particularly those that unlock concrete emissions-reducing actions.
Media Support: Help craft materials for media outreach based on the ongoing insights you uncover each month–particularly when they unlock emissions-reducing actions.
Partner Engagement: Support key partners in adopting these emissions-reducing actions and overcoming whatever barriers come up–whether that means custom analysis in Python, quick and dirty spreadsheet exercises, pitch decks, or talks.
Case Study Development: Each time you have supported a prominent institution in successfully implementing a novel emissions-reducing solution, lead development of a clear, crisp, persuasive case study for other institutions that may wish to adopt it too.
Product Design Support: For those case studies that succeed and are scalable, assist your engineering team colleagues in designing ways to automate what users need so this impact can be achieved at scale.
