This senior software engineering position is within the Missions Systems business unit in the Simulation and Training Solutions(STS) C4ISR portfolio. STS develops and builds simulators and training systems for both military and commercial customers. Devices range in complexity from desktop trainers to high fidelity weapon system trainers.

We are seeking a highly motivated, creative, and passionate Senior Software Engineer to drive innovative solutions to our customers.  In this position, you will work as an individual contributor on a scrum team to design, implement, integrate, and test system software features of moderate to high complexity.  You will work with subject matter experts and other team stakeholders to execute the team’s features and objectives on one of our largest DoD programs.  The ideal candidate has prior working experience working on mission-centric software on a cross functional agile software development team.  This position requires an active US DoD secret security clearance.  Most aspects of the job are done in a classified lab environment and requires daily onsite presence at our Sterling, VA location.   Eligible for relocation.

What you will do:

  • Design, develop, implement, integrate and test real-time, multi-threaded software and associated user interfaces.

  • Collaborate with systems engineers and architects to decompose system requirements from CONOPS into lower-level software requirements and translate those into working code.

  • Work with program team to ensure the logical and systematic development of solutions based on customer requirements accounting for technical, schedule, and budget constraints.

  • Work with the scrum team in developing detailed user stories to include descriptive acceptance criteria.

  • Participate in daily standups, backlog grooming, sprint/increment planning events, and end of sprint retrospectives.

  • Proactively raise risks and opportunities and communicate them to the Product Owner and/or Scrum Master.

  • Analyze, debug, troubleshoot, and fix system trouble reports (STRs) and work with test team to ensure timely closure.

  • Contribute to engineering documentation such as interface control documents, software development description documents, test procedures, etc.

  • Perform bidding and proposal activities to support the acquisition of new business.

  • Travel to customer locations for incremental software deliveries and mission test events (up to 20%).

  • Actively mentor and coach junior engineers.

Education and experience:

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 9 years of relevant experience.

  • Active and transferable U.S. government issued security clearance is required prior to start date.

  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.

Skills you must have:

  • High proficiency in C++ or C# and object-oriented design and programming.

  • Experience working in DevOps engineering environments and with tools that support Agile Software Development such as the ALM suite (JIRA, Confluence, Crucible, Bamboo).

  • Experience working on a scrum team using the Scaled Agile Framework

Skills we value:

  • Full stack developer with experience in design and development of complex, integrated software systems that interface with real-time aircraft hardware.

  • Experience with software development in Linux and Windows Operating Systems.

  • Experience developing software that interfaces with hardware and avionics components such as mission displays, mission computers, flight management computers, etc.

  • Experience in software development and concurrency projects involving the full software development lifecycle (SDLC).

  • Experience troubleshooting and debugging existing code

  • Working knowledge of the commercial and military communications protocols (RS-232, ARINC 429, MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 664 (AFDX) and ARINC 818 (Fiber) associated with avionics.
