Job Description

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Senior Accountant is an ambitious, detail-oriented and self-motivated individual who will report to and partner with the Assistant Controller, as part of the ten-person Accounting Department of KIPP NYC. The Senior Accountant will be responsible for ensuring the monthly closing duties completed accurately for all assigned KIPP NYC entities, is responsible for the day-to-day accounting and bank reconciliations, as well as for developing, and updating monthly, quarterly and annual financial schedules required to maintain compliance with financial policies and procedures consistent with generally accepted accounting principles (“GAAP”).

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Day-to-day Operations
    • Ensure accounting is performed in accordance with GAAP and update the monthly close schedules for financial compliance. Review financial statements for accuracy during each close and highlight any issues to the Assistant Controller. Areas of oversight include, but are not limited to, the following:
      • Accounts Receivable
      • Revenue Recognition
      • Bank reconciliations
      • Balance sheet account reconciliation
      • Cash collections
      • Payroll entries
    • Support the assistant controller in driving the annual audit process; oversee the preparation of schedules for the annual audits, ensuring accuracy and timeliness of delivery; review all statements and support liaising with the auditors
    • Support business processes and accounting policies and prepare corresponding documentation
    • Deliver exceptional, friendly customer service by researching and resolving accounting-related inquiries in timely and professional manner
    • Create and analyze liability, asset, and capital accounts by compiling electronic data and required documentation
    • Some local travel within NYC required
  • Other
    • Maintaining and reconciling balance sheet and general ledger accounts
    • Investigating and resolving audit findings, account discrepancies, and issues of noncompliance
    • Contributing to the development of new or amended accounting systems, programs, and procedures
    • Comply with all federal, state, and local protocols including legal requirements
    • Perform other related duties and projects as requested

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and minimum of 5 years work experience in non-profit accounting required
  • CPA and/or MBA preferred
  • Meticulous attention to detail and ability to maintain confidentiality of information required
  • Flexible with a strong work ethic and an entrepreneurial spirit to accommodate multiple priorities
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office products with strong Excel skills and an aptitude for learning new software required
  • Ability to work with little to no supervision
  • Experience utilizing Sage Intacct and compatible accounting software preferred.
  • Experience working in non-profit accounting strongly preferred.

Additional Information

Compensation and Benefits:

KIPP NYC offers a competitive salary ranging from $97,850 - $112,270 per year.  Salaries are determined using an equitable compensation scale that accounts for years of experience relevant to the role, NYS initial or professional certification, and longevity within the KIPP network. KIPP NYC will evaluate a candidate’s years of experience, certification, and longevity at point of hire to determine the step/level a new hire will be placed within our teacher salary scale.
