What you get to do:
As a Zoological Specialist, you will be responsible for providing consistent care of the collection of all assigned animals in the park; following all husbandry protocols for the specified zoological areas; working in a consistent professional and positive manner; learning and demonstrating required training and handling protocols for any applicable animals; demonstrating the ability to safely work with a very diverse collection of animals including mammals, birds, and reptiles; having excellent guest service skills for daily presentations and interactions. You will:
- Perform area cleaning and maintenance of Zoological areas and enclosures
- Daily, weekly, and monthly record keeping
- Have the ability to recognize the overall health of each animal through daily observation.
- Knowledge of and the ability to discuss the natural history of the animals in the Zoological Department
- Demonstrate the understanding of the SOPs for an animal escape and the responsibilities of being onsite during this situation
- Restrain animals and administer assisted feedings.
- Assist staff and veterinarians with medical procedures.
- Assist with rescue and use trucks and/or forklifts to transport stranded animals
- Clean and sanitize animal enclosures, food preparation, and storage areas.
- Occasionally assist other locations and areas throughout the park as needed
- Monitor and record animal's behavior and notify staff of potential health and social problems.
- Perform all aspects of proper animal food preparation, distribution, and storage areas.
- Under supervision, administer daily vitamins and special medications as prescribed by veterinarians.
- Collect and label urine, fecal and other diagnostic samples as directed.
- Professionally interact with the public during offsite rescues and onsite for rescue area tours and in park public presentations.
- Participate as necessary with SeaWorld PR, marketing and media
What it takes to succeed:
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- High School diploma or GED required (College level courses or degree preferred)
- Must have a clean driving record and possess the ability to operate a company vehicle
- Must be able to spend long periods of time standing and be comfortable working outdoors in a variety of conditions
- Prior guest service experience preferred
- Able to frequently lift/move 50 pounds, occasionally lift/move up to 100 pounds
- Ability to transport animals on sandy beaches, rocks, and or a flight of stairs
- Stand for prolonged periods of time
- Flexible schedule to work weekends, holidays, early mornings and late evenings
- Strong written/verbal communication skills; ability to speak effectively before groups
- Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical journals, business periodicals and governmental procedures
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent. College background in psychology, zoology or biology is a plus.
Competencies:
- Strong written/verbal communication skills; able to read, write and speak English. Basic math skills required.
Responsibility for Others:
- Maintain a safe work environment and adhere to safety requirements.
Availability:
- Available to work varying shifts or hours based on park hours, i.e. be able to work opening and closing shifts, nights, weekends, and Holidays.
Training:
- Park wide training including Implicit Bias and as needed.
Work Conditions:
- Work indoors and in outside weather conditions (i.e., direct sunlight, wet and/or humid)
- Able to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
