Kamehameha Schools, Hawaii Campus Elementary School is seeking a dedicated kumu with a passion for supporting ʻŌiwi Hawaiʻi learners and advancing instructional excellence. Key responsibilities include providing instructional coaching to ensure that all K-5 kumu are supported in continually evolving their instructional practice to meet the cultural and academic needs and aspirations of our haumāna.

This position requires strong skills with designing personalized, mastery-based, and standards-aligned learning experiences that cater to individual learner needs. A sincere commitment to personalized, mastery-driven education and a strong understanding of effective instructional practices and general core content standards (e.g. math, language arts, etc.) are essential for success in this role.

This is a Defined Term position at our Hawaii Campus in Kea'au.

Job Summary

In collaboration with Leadership, provides training and coaching to faculty/staff with a primary focus upon improving curricular and instructional practices to promote student learning and program effectiveness. Under the direction of school leadership, maintains and develops cutting-edge teaching skills, the ability to differentiate for various learners, and the ability to foster E Ola! Learner Outcomes and values in their daily practice. Promotes and builds a culture of excellence, positive relationships, and focuses upon improving curricular and instructional practice in assigned school and/or teams by conducting informal/guided observations to provide feedback for professional growth. Collaborates with teachers, admin., support staff to provide relevant HCBE personalized learning experiences for students. Uses student assessment data to customize teaching to address students' needs (remedial and high end). Assists teachers in interpreting formative and summative student assessment data to identify and implement instructional interventions with identified students.

Essential Responsibilities

Co-Teaching and Intervention

  • Collaborates with teachers to co-design, co-teach, and co-assess relevant HCBE personalized learning experiences for students.
  • Uses a variety of assessments to measure student learning and drive instruction and determine small groupings and modifications.
  • Provides tutorial support to identified students requiring additional instruction as determined by assessment data, teacher observations and student support team.
  • Communicates on a regular basis with teachers, admin., student support team, and ‘ohana to ensure that the educational needs of identified students are appropriately addressed.
  • Develop action plans to target specific needs of students and groups of students who may require added support.
  • Provides support to families in identified areas as needed.

Coaching and Training

  • Regularly demonstrates/conducts model lessons with students and shares expertise with teachers to serve as a faculty-based professional development coach and/or trainer.
  • Train and coach teachers, Educational Assistants, and educational leaders/staff.
  • In collaboration with school leadership, responsible for the improvement of instruction through analysis of instructional teaching methods, identification, and management of professional development opportunities at school-wide, divisional level.
  • Supports the instructional development of all teachers in understanding HCBE, E Ola!, standards-based curriculum and varied assessments and data analysis focusing on the strategic how of teaching and sharing multiple instructional strategies/processes.
  • Informally observe (non-evaluative) lessons and provide feedback for a teacher’s professional growth and students’ success.

Leadership and Professional Learning Design

  • Create and lead professional learning communities to facilitate teachers working together to improve their teaching practices.
  • Participate with school level leadership in understanding, analyzing, and interpreting student data, as well as using those findings
