About the role

Job Description Summary

The Director of Graduate Medical Education and Associate Designated Institutional Official (ADIO) will report directly to the Senior Associate Dean for Graduate Medical Education (GME) and Continuing Medical Education (CME) and Designated Institutional Official (DIO) for the College of Medicine/MUSC Health-Charleston Division and will assist with the institutional accreditation as a sponsoring institution by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

The Director of Graduate Medical Education and ADIO will assist with the oversight and administration of all GME and any other educational program(s) that may be overseen by the Senior Associate Dean for GME and CME/DIO and assure compliance with established and evolving ACGME Institutional, Common, and specialty-specific Program Requirements and other applicable professional, educational, accreditation, and regulatory standards (or other accrediting body as applicable).

Job Description

25% - Serves as an institutional leader who will assist the Senior Associate Dean/DIO on establishing and maintaining MUSC- COM institutional accreditation by the ACGME as a sponsoring institution (other accrediting bodies as applicable). Provides administrative oversight, educational guidance, and resource identification for all GME programs.

20% - Has Primary oversight for the MUSC Health Orangeburg graduate medical education programs including application and operations and maintenance of accreditation.

10% - Has primary oversight for all MUSC Health-Charleston non-MD programs including application and operations and maintenance of accreditation.

10% - Assists with the development and oversight of any newly established Clinical Learning Environments that fall under the purview of the Senior Associate Dean for GME and CME. Develops and shares best practices, policies, and procedures across the GME communities around issues such as resident and faculty recruitment, managing professionalism issues, remediating deficiencies, maintaining a positive learning environment, etc. Develops and implements Health Systems Sciences curriculum across all programs, including engagement in QI & PS projects.

10% - Designs and implements operational structures and processes that optimally integrate GME and the clinical learning environment including engagement of trainees in quality and patient safety. Establishes and implements procedures to gather requisite program and resident data, as well as documents that address program citations or program changes, to facilitate highly functioning Clinical Competency and Program Evaluation Committees. Provides support for program directors and core faculty as appropriate to roles and functions; participates in selection and mentoring of program directors with appropriate skills and competencies. Provides mentoring for program administrators, (managers, coordinators, PDs and faculty on Goals and Objective design for specific rotational experiences, assures alignment with eval tools.  Develops and implements robust evaluation system, including resident portfolios, Individual Learning Plans, and direct observation tools.

15% - Facilitates and secures strategic linkages between internal and external partners to achieve patient care and educational outcomes that positively affect population health. Engages proactively within a matrixed organizational structure to assure that ACGME best practices also support Liaison Committee for Medical Education (LCME) standards where MUSC-College of Medicine sponsored programs co-exist with sites that also host COM students. Participates in identifying solutions when challenges are communicated or reported by learners at related sites. Cultivates a culture of innovation; pursues opportunities for innovation across the UME-GME-CME continuum as well as interdisciplinary educational opportunities.

10% - Assist with housing partnerships and resource identification for learners and providers in the Charleston and Orangeburg campuses. Other duties and projects assigned as needed.

Technical/computer skills:

Microsoft Office Suite. Institutional databases and software supporting GME Office and related Administrative Offices of the University. Adept with virtual conferencing platforms and use.
