Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and the Wake Forest University School of Medicine are seeking a dynamic leader with strong credentials in clinical medicine and clinical, translational, or health services research for the inaugural position of Chair, Department of Cancer Medicine. Requirements for the position include national academic stature, accomplished clinical skills, and demonstrable leadership and management skills to build and expand all aspects of this newly formed department, including the research and educational activities of the Department. The successful candidate will be excited to grow the former section of Hematology & Medical Oncology (formerly with the Department of Internal Medicine) into a world class academic department of Cancer Medicine with initial divisions of Hematology & Stem Cell Transplant, Medical Oncology, and Supportive Care Oncology. Candidates should meet criteria for an appointment at the Associate Professor or Professor (strongly preferred) level.
The Chair will serve as a visible and inspiring leader and will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the Department of Cancer Medicine with responsibility for the research, education, and clinical missions. The successful candidate will have opportunity to define the future culture of this newly created department, leveraging the talents of a diverse group of faculty, staff, residents, fellows, and students as the medical school and health system enter a period of unprecedented growth. The candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to promoting an academic and clinical culture that prizes health equity for communities served by Wake Forest University School of Medicine and a commitment to providing a just, equitable, diverse, and inclusive environment for all members, trainees, and affiliates of the Department.
Critically, the Chair will partner with leaders throughout the Wake Forest University School of Medicine and Atrium Health to elevate and promote the importance of the academic mission. The Chair will manage and strengthen a robust portfolio of research, while encouraging the importance of grant-funding, scholarly output, and publications in high impact journals and providing availability of internal resources to support these efforts. This Chair will foster an outstanding teaching environment, while continuously improving and advancing the medical education curriculum and training programs available.
The Chair will provide clinical leadership to enhance quality of care and support continued growth and expansion of clinical capabilities. Through collaboration with department chairs in Winston-Salem and Charlotte, the Chair will establish and promote best practices and improve high reliability of clinical services. This leader will partner with faculty practices and community practices to ensure all patients receive the highest level of care. Working closely with health system leadership, the Chair will ensure alignment of the department and enterprise clinical and academic missions.
Key to success in advancing the academic, research, and clinical missions, the Chair will be business savvy and responsible for operations and financial performance for the Department. Based on a national or international reputation in the field of oncology, the successful candidate will recruit and retain high-performing faculty and staff. Further, this leader will maintain a collaborative and transparent atmosphere, further develop existing programs, and identify potential opportunities for additional development.
The Chair will demonstrate exemplary clinical, research and academic achievements, strategic leadership ability, strong interpersonal and communication skills, an entrepreneurial spirit, and active engagement in oncology on a national level. As part of the growing organization, the Chair will be responsible for collaboratively expanding the clinical services of oncology across the Winston-Salem market, in partnership with other academic and clinical leaders. The chair will also work collaboratively with other leaders throughout the Advocate Health footprint, including oncology partners in Charlotte, NC.
Through the continued advancement of research, education, and clinical services, the Chair will significantly elevate the national reputation of the Department of Cancer Medicine during their tenure. To be successful, this Chair must take a concerted approach to partnering with key constituency groups in and outside the Department of Cancer Medicine effectively collaborating across Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist and the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, including community relations, to realize the mission of the medical school within the diverse community of Western North Carolina.
