MS-CC Assistant Director, Collaboratory in Climate Science
The Minority Serving - Cyberinfrastructure Consortium (MS-CC) envisions a transformational
partnership to promote advanced cyberinfrastructure capabilities at Historically Black Colleges and
Universities (HBCUs) and Tribal Colleges and Universities (TCUs). This will be accomplished through a variety of community-focused programming centered on workforce development, collaboration, research, and building capacity among institutions. The MS-CC is currently funded by National Science Foundation grant awards.
The MS-CC recently received additional funding through its Proof-of-Concept Grant (PoCG) program to develop a Collaboratory in Climate Science, and is searching for an enthusiastic, collaborative and dynamic Assistant Director who can collaborate with faculty, staff, and students at HBCUs and TCUs to successfully advance the strategy of the Collaboratory in Climate Science. The Assistant Director will collaborate with leaders and subject matter experts and HBCUs and TCUs to make a significant, positive difference in the awareness, access, and use of cyberinfrastructure resources for climate science research at HBCUs and TCUs, initially through an internship program and also organizing relevant regional and national events and creating opportunities to collaborate with other NSF climate science/CI focused efforts where relevant to HBCUs and TCUsYou may learn more about the Climate Science Collaboratory here: https://bit.ly/mscccollaboratory.
The Assistant Director will work under the general direction of the MS-CC Director of Cyberinfrastructure Programs and will be integral in ensuring the MS-CC’s Climate Science Programming is informed by the voices and priorities of the HBCU and TCU communities, and demonstrates the value of cyberinfrastructure for research, particularly climate science research. The Assistant Director will lead meetings with the HBCU and TCU leaders and other collaborators within the research and education community.
Specific responsibilities include:
Developing the strategy for establishing the Collaboratory in Climate Science
Implementation of the MS-CC Internship in Climate and Data Science.
Developing climate Science programming and outreach to broaden participation in the Collaboratory’s activities.
Proposing and developing solutions to improve program quality and/or efficiency.
Assessing the strengths and gaps in preparing students and faculty for participation in the activities supported by the Collaboratory.
Promotion of the MS-CC Collaboratory in Climate Science through presentations and panel moderation at nationwide events focused on climate science at minority serving institutions.
Organizing and leading multi-institutional collaborations and projects.
Ability to travel 7-10 days per month.
Required Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, marine biology, environmental engineering, urban planning, data science or other relevant STEM field.
Must possess strong written and verbal communications skills, and be highly responsive to internal and external stakeholders.
Strong commitment to improving access and inclusion within higher education research and technology.
Minimum 5 years of experience leading climate science programs in higher education.
Proficiency in Google Suite, Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint.
Preferred Qualifications:
HBCU or TCU alumnus or experience working with HBCUs and/or TCUs.
Experience leading or supporting climate-focused research programs.
Graduate degree in atmospheric science, meteorology, marine biology, environmental engineering, urban planning, data science or other relevant STEM field
Experience managing staff with varying skill sets.
