Summary

This position partners with teachers (infant through school-age) to strengthen daily practice, environmental quality, and compliance. The role blends on-the-floor coaching with structured observations using ITERS/ECERS/SACERS, alignment to NC Foundations, and rigorous safety checks of classrooms and playgrounds. The coach will mentor staff on DCDEE rules, supports inclusive practices for children with special needs, and leads corrective action and follow-up. The Classroom Support Coach must demonstrate exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, fostering positive relationships with teachers, staff, children, and families.

MAJOR JOB FUNCTIONS

The following is a summary of the major essential functions of the job.  The incumbent may perform other duties, both major and minor, that are not mentioned below; and specific functions may change from time to time. 

  • Conduct formative observations using ITERS-3, ECERS-3, and SACERS-U; provide written feedback, action plans, and side-by-side coaching cycles.

  • Align lesson planning and interactions to NC Foundations for Early Learning & Development (birth–5) goals and indicators; model strategies and materials that reflect Foundations’ domains.

  • Assist in curriculum planning, training and implementation.

  • Support teachers in inclusive practices, adaptations, and data collection for children with special needs.

  • Monitor classrooms and programs for continuous compliance with DCDEE rules, NC General Statutes Chapter 110 (e.g., §110-91), center policies and local requirements; prepare teams for assessments, licensing and sanitation visits, and audits.

  • Maintain documentation (checklists, incident/maintenance logs, coaching notes) and track completion of required training

  • Lead daily visual scans and weekly/monthly documented safety inspections of playgrounds and classrooms; escalate hazards immediately and track mitigation.

  • Verify surfacing depth/extent, equipment spacing/height, entanglement/entrapment hazards, protrusions, and proper maintenance per CPSC guidance; confirm fall zones and supervision plans.

  • Check indoor environments for secure furnishings, outlet protections, electrical and choking hazards, safe sleep set-ups, sanitation, safe storage of meds/hazardous items, emergency equipment, and clear egress—consistent with statute and DCDEE rules.

  • Coordinate and/or deliver required playground safety training content (hazards, supervision, maintenance, age/ability appropriateness).

  • Provide coaching specific to the needs of the individual age groups served; ensure alignment with ECE competencies and Foundations (health & safety, environmental design, development, DAP activities, guidance).

  • Mentor staff toward successful ERS performance (e.g., materials access, interactions, schedules, outdoor provisions).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

The following qualifications, or equivalents, are the minimum requirements necessary to perform the essential functions of this job:

EDUCATION AND FORMAL TRAINING:

  • Associate degree in Early Childhood Education or related field required

  • CPR and First Aid certifications required

  • Infant Toddler Safe Sleep (ITS-SIDS) certification required

  • BSAC Certification required

  • Playground Safety certification required

WORK EXPERIENCE:

  • 10 years documented successful classroom experience (infant – school-age), including demonstrated support for children with special needs required

  • Experience conducting ERS observations or quality rating support preferred

  • Experience developing and implementing quality initiatives preferred

  • Experience delivering staff training (ERS, inclusive practices, BSAC modules, playground safety) preferred

  • Coaching certification or formal training in practice-based coaching or instructional leadership preferred
