This position is part of the National Institute of Standards (NIST) Professional Research Experience (PREP) program. NIST recognizes that its research staff may wish to collaborate with researchers at academic institutions on specific projects of mutual interest, thus requires that such institutions must be the recipient of a PREP award. The PREP program requires staff from a wide range of backgrounds to work on scientific research in many areas. Employees in this position will perform technical work that underpins the scientific research of the collaboration.

Additive Manufacturing Testbed and Process Digital Twin Development

As part of its efforts to meet the needs of U.S. manufacturers in advanced manufacturing, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) has developed unique facilities, including the Laser Processing and Metrology Testbed (LPDT). The LPDT is a testbed, constantly in development to implement cutting edge measurement science by integrating a laser-based metal additive manufacturing (AM) system within a high-energy synchrotron x-ray facility, such as the Cornell High Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS). Primary research goals on the LPDT are to investigate the interrelationship between metal microstructure evolution, internal and surface temperatures, new laser system control strategies, and other in-situ measurement technologies. NIST requires assistance to collect and process data from the LPDT, which includes high speed visible and thermal imaging, in conjunction with x-ray diffraction data. To extract meaningful information requires development of novel models, methods, and software tools to fuse the multi-modality data generated, which requires expertise in information science, including artificial intelligence and digital twin technologies. The engineer will split time by assisting NST engineers to develop new mechanical, electrical, and optical hardware for the LPDT, assist with experiment execution at NIST or x-ray synchrotron facilities, and assist with data processing and development of digital twins.
Key responsibilities will include but are not limited to:
§ Analyzing, pre-processing and formatting data generated from the NIST LPDT testbed and comparing the data with the data acquired from other systems at NIST and our collaborators,
§ Determining methods to fusing multi-modality data observed from AM process monitoring for process anomaly detection.
§ Presenting results at internal meetings, and occasional meetings with external stakeholders.
§ Provide assistance with computer-aided design (CAD), digital signal processing hardware and algorithms, and prototyping new measurement systems on the LPDT.
§ Provide assistance with planning, execution, data collection, and logistics for performing experiments on the LPDT at various synchrotron x-ray facilities.
Qualifications
§ A PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Information Science, or a related field.
§ 6 years of relevant experience
§ Familiarity with laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing (AM) processes
§ Familiarity with high speed video and/or thermographic measurements of AM processes
§ Familiarity with machine learning and deep learning tools.
§ Ability to develop prototypes of tools needed to analyze data.
§ Strong oral and written communication skills.
