Position Overview:

The Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at New York University College of Dentistry is seeking a highly motivated and accomplished individual to serve as both the Director of the Behavioral Core within our multidisciplinary Pain Center Research program and as an educator. This position is a teaching-track faculty appointment, as a clinical assistant professor, that offers a unique opportunity to lead a critical research resource while maintaining a primary and active role in the educational mission of the department and college. The position requires a commitment to pain research and the fostering of a strong intellectual community. The successful candidate will report to the Director of the Pain Center and the Department Chair.

Key Responsibilities:

Education & Teaching

  • Instructional Excellence: Develop and deliver lectures in pharmacology, cell biology, and head and neck anatomy to dental and allied health professional students.
  • Teach small group head and neck anatomy labs using plastinated materials.
  • Course Direction: Serve as the director for a core pharmacology course, with responsibility for curriculum design, scheduling, coordinating lecturers, and student assessment.
  • Program and Seminar Leadership: Direct the master’s in oral biology track program; this includes direction of the graduate seminar series in oral biology, overseeing student presentations and master’s theses, and mentoring graduate students.
  • Curricular Contribution: Actively contribute to curriculum development and assessment within the Department of Molecular Pathobiology.

   Behavioral Core Leadership (Pain Center Research)

  • Behavioral Core Direction: Oversee the daily operations, strategic development, and management of the Pain Center’s Behavioral Core, a vital shared research resource.
  • Assay Implementation: Ensure the maintenance and implementation of rigorous, state-of-the-art behavioral assays, specifically those relevant to pain, analgesia, and sensation, such as mechanical hypersensitivity, thermal nociception, and affective behaviors.
  • Expert Consultation: Provide training and support to faculty, post-docs, and students regarding experimental design, data analysis, and the interpretation of behavioral studies.
  • Compliance & Management: Develop standard operating procedures and ensure strict compliance with institutional and governmental regulations for animal care; including managing the core budget, equipment, and personnel.

  In compliance with NYC's Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position for is $140,000  to $150,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, as well as market and organizational considerations when extending an offer.

 

Qualifications

Required:

A Ph.D., D.D.S./D.M.D., M.D., or equivalent terminal degree in a relevant field such as Neuroscience, Pharmacology, or Cell Biology.

  • Demonstrated expertise and significant experience in conducting and overseeing in vivo behavioral research, particularly regarding pain or sensation.
  • Prior experience managing a research core facility or significant shared resources.
  • A proven record of excellence and effectiveness in teaching pharmacology, cell biology, head and neck anatomy at the professional level.
  • Experience in academic leadership, such as course direction.
  • Experience mentoring graduate students and post-doctoral fellows.
