The Team:
The Financial Accounting Team is part of the Finance and Business Support Group. The main objective of the Financial Accounting Team is to ensure that the Department meets all of its statutory reporting obligations and deadlines. The main output of the Team is the annual audited statutory accounts.
The Team is responsible for oversight of the Department’s Financial Management System, accounting policies and compliance with Australian Accounting Standards. The Team is also responsible for the monthly submission of financial information to the Department of Treasury and Finance, co-ordinating the annual financial audit with Audit Tasmania and providing timely information to the Department’s Expenditure Review Committee and the Audit and Risk Committee.
The Team also maintains the Department’s Asset and Leasing registers, including the capitalisation of construction projects.
The Role:
The Manager - Financial Accounting has overall operational responsibility for ensuring the Agency’s compliance with financial accounting requirements.
The Manager Financial Accounting is:
- Responsible for managing the preparation of the Department’s financial reports and responses to stakeholders, ensuring they are of a high standard and presented on a timely basis.
- The lead technical expert on the Department’s compliance with Australian Accounting Standards, the Financial Management Act 2016 and Treasurer’s Instructions.
- A key liaison between stakeholders and the Information Technology Unit which manages the Department’s TechnologyOne ERP system.
- Responsible for the maintenance and continual improvement of the Department’s Finance Manual.
You will need to:
- Demonstrated expertise in preparing financial statements within a large and complex organisation.
- Experience in monitoring and maintaining the financial integrity of a complex Financial Management system.
- Excellent communication and analytical skills to gain an understanding of the financial reporting needs of stakeholders and propose solutions which comply with Australian Accounting Standards.
- Manage the preparation of high level strategic advice and support in the area of financial accounting.
- Manage the development, implementation and maintenance of appropriate policies, procedures, quality assurance measures, benchmarks and reporting frameworks to ensure a high level of client/stakeholder service and satisfaction.
- Manage the preparation of the Agency’s financial statements in accordance with Treasury’s model financial statements and Australian Accounting Standards.

Details of appointment:
Permanent, day worker, working 76 hours per fortnight. Commencing as soon as possible.
*notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.
Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full time, part time, and casual vacancies.
Salary: $139,470 to $148,863 per annum. Our Employer 12 per cent superannuation contribution is on top of this amount.
- Salary range is in accordance with Public Sector Unions Wages Agreement 2022.
Eligibility:
Successful applicants will be required to meet the essential criteria.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications, together with membership of, or eligible for membership of, either CPA Australia, the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand or the Institute of Public Accountants.
