Job Description

The NYC Department of Probation (DOP) is a world leader in working creatively and effectively engaging with people under court-mandated community supervision. Through innovative partnerships with people and organizations throughout the New York City, DOP provides opportunities for those on probation to access services and opportunities that positively impact their life trajectory. Following the best current data on “what works,” staff at DOP engage in meaningful relationships with those on probation in an effort to enhance community safety and decrease recidivism.

The Department of Probation seeks a qualified Community Coordinator to assist with the Girls Talk program. "Girls Talk" is a youth mentoring program for young ladies between the ages of 10-20 yrs. old. The "Girls Talk" mission is to provide an outlet and a safe haven for undeserved youth while simultaneously helping them find their inner voice. Mentors meet with youth twice a month to discuss a variety of topics, which include self-love, self-image, abuse, and bullying to name a few. The program also helps these young women develop different life skills thus creating a positive experience.

The selected candidate will be responsible for, but not limited to, the following:
- Assisting in maintaining a consistent presence school, primarily engaging with 11th- and 12th-grade students
- Assisting in partnership with the Department of Education to help provide programming in schools such as Beach Channel High School, Collegiate High School, Brownsville Academy, EPIC High School, Flushing High School, among others.
- Assisting in outreach efforts to increase engagement with other potential schools for programming; Organizing tabling events throughout the year to increase outreach and program visibility.
- Helping coordinate biweekly sessions at Queens Family Court, working with girls on probation to provide support through group discussions and one-on-one mentoring.
- Planning trips for program participants to provide them with positive, uplifting experiences outside their day-to-day activities.
- Reaching out to stakeholders for participation and funding opportunities.
- Volunteering at various Department of Probation events and functions with Girls Talk participants to further increase community involvement and engagement.

Qualifications

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
2. High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
3. Education and/or experience which is equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in "1" above.
