Job Summary - Senior Director, Surgical Services

Working collaboratively with Medical Staff leaders, nursing and administrative leaders and all stakeholders, this position will be responsible for all aspects of Surgical Services and other assigned services throughout Corewell Health including strategic planning and implementation, operational performance (quality/safety; patient/family experience; financial performance; employee work life) and the ongoing development of leaders and teams to support care and services. This role will serve as the primary resource and advocate for high professional standards, high quality clinical outcomes and team member engagement and performance. This position shall also ensure and oversee (with key business partners), academic and research activities and philanthropic initiatives. Services include care for patients across the continuum including hospital and ambulatory settings throughout the primary and secondary service areas. The position will also be responsible for the development of anesthesia business processes and function as the relationship manager of a multi-million-dollar anesthesia contract and the lead for the Joint Operations Committee responsible for overseeing: compliance to contract terms, quality standards and expense reconciliation.

Essential Functions - Senior Director, Surgical Services

  • Directs and oversees surgical services operations (inclusive of anesthesia services) for all Corewell Health West surgical and endoscopy sites performing over 100,000 procedures. Assures safe, cost-effective quality care delivery, based on regulatory, accrediting and professional practice standards, and the philosophy and policies for surgical services. Develops and maintains quality monitoring systems to continuously monitor and measure the quality, safety and outcomes of the responsible service. Develops service/unit quality indicators to evaluate unit performance, staff performance, level of practice for specific patient populations and develops improvement plans to correct variances. Participates in and facilitates interdisciplinary performance initiatives.
  • Drives continuous assessment and improvement of processes and assists stakeholders and process owners in prioritizing improvement opportunities. Ensures service performance achieves established goals for financial performance, patient experience, quality outcomes and physician/employee satisfaction. Facilitates quality improvement targeting key clinical outcomes as well as process improvement opportunities.
  • In conjunction with key stakeholders and service line leaders, establishes and facilitates the strategic vision for Operations of Surgical Services and any assigned ancillary service(s) within the CH region including ambulatory surgical centers Provides strategic program leadership to achieve program growth. Participates in the development and review of policies, procedures and guidelines based on evidence-based practice, research findings, and C quality outcomes.
  • Organizes the structure of assigned services. Directs and supervises services to assure safe, cost effective, quality care delivery in the clinical area based on regulatory, accrediting and professional practice standards, and the philosophy, policies and procedures for the Region and assigned services. Evaluation of care delivery is achieved through performance improvement process, monitoring of quality indicators, evaluation of staff performance, and rounding.
  • Prepares (as part of the strategic plan) capital and operating budgets subject to normal authority, approval limitations and timelines. Analyzes critical financial performance and develops strategic action plans for optimum program profitability. Plans staffing and resource allocation to meet productivity targets and patient care needs. Develops programs and collaborative strategies to enhance growth and revenue for service areas.
  • Analyzes market data and maintains awareness of regional market strategic opportunities for program growth. Monitors and evaluates product line metrics in clinical outcomes, customer service, financial performance, volumes and market position against strategic program goals.
  • Assures a process to identify and address ethical issues within responsible service and the organization. Formulates decisions and actions based on ethical principles. Advocates for privacy, confidentiality, and security of patient, staff and organization data.
  • Develops, maintains, and evaluates a professional practice environment that empowers and supports staff. Encourages shared decision-making, accountability, and autonomy. Establishes and promotes a framework for staff which includes mission, vision, core values, philosophy, and standards of practice. Serves as a role model and mentor to staff, colleagues and students.
