Machine Design Engineer

Position Summary:
The position will provide support for flexible metal piping products (bellows, expansion joints, hoses) being sold into the Aerospace, Automotive, and General Industries. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to machine design, process engineering, tooling design, equipment troubleshooting, prototype development, working with an interdisciplinary team to develop solutions to customer demands.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Design machines, fixtures and tooling and manage their construction timeline to support new and existing manufacturing efforts
- Oversee and manage multiple projects or initiatives
- Support New Product Introduction (NPI) efforts as part of a multidisciplinary team
- Support existing equipment and products as well as identifying improvement opportunities for the equipment and process
- Develop and maintain robust documentation for all purchased and internally developed equipment
- Review product development requirements for compatibility with processing methods to determine costs and schedules
- Evaluate product for manufacturability and provide feedback to internal and external customers
- Prioritize safety, user interfaces, and ergonomics into designs
- Writing equipment specifications, installation, work instructions, technical manuals, training, and qualification protocols as well as supporting all equipment and product validation activities
Preferred Skills and Work Experience
- Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, Associate from Trade School and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 5 years of experience with 10 years preferred
- Work with hydraulics systems either designing, integrating into a larger system, or activating. Knowledgeable in the use of standard hydraulic components.
- Advanced beginner to intermediate experience with finite element analysis.
- Knowledgeable in the correct sizing and application of standard machine design components (e.g. fasteners, bearings).
- Strong understanding of Design for Manufacturability required, especially as related to machined and welded components
- Experience with sheet metal forming, tube bending, and welding of stainless steels and nickel alloys strongly preferred
- Excellent understanding of GD&T and the ability to perform tolerance stack up analysis
- Must be proficient in a current CAD package for modeling, drafting, and assembly. Solidworks experience a plus
Additional Competencies
- Partial joint penetration weld sizing for structural applications
- Experience designing seals using o-rings
- Experience writing purchase specifications for capital expenditures
- Familiarity with performing Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA)
- Proficiency in computer applications including Microsoft Excel, Outlook, and Word. Advanced skills in Excel, Microsoft Project, or other relevant software a plus
- Familiarity with an ERP or MRP system such as SAP a plus.
- Excellent professional communication skills (written and verbal)
- Excellent organization skills with the ability to multitask and prioritize with minimal supervision
- Ability to apply design theory across a multitude of industries/domains
Work Environment
- Working conditions are split between a standard office environment and production environment.
- Ability to perform job duties that require standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting upper body, lifting of objects up to 25lbs.
- May be required to work long hours and occasional weekends to support critical project deadlines.
Travel
- Travel requirements are minimal.
