The Appellate Division of the Oregon Department of Justice is seeking a collaborative self-starter to join the team as the Appellate Assistant Staff Manager. In this role, you will get to expand your leadership skills supervising the Appellate Division’s administrative staff under the supervision of Appellate’s Staff Manager - training and developing the team and assisting the attorneys to do their job. This position will require travel between our Portland and Salem offices with occasional travel to our Eugene and Bend offices. This position offers a hybrid schedule.
The Appellate Division represents the State of Oregon and all its agencies, departments, boards, and commissions before all state and federal appellate courts, and occasionally in state circuit courts. The division, through its attorneys, is responsible for defending the state's legal policies in written briefs, oral arguments, and occasionally in trial.

Job Duties:
You’ll be entrusted to (in part):
- Monitor the day-to-day workflow to ensure filings to the court are timely;
- Review completed work to ensure court filings are consistent with policy, procedure, and court rules;
- Adjust priorities relating to workloads and deadlines to accommodate staff absences and competing assignments;
- Process leave requests and monthly timesheets;
- Act as resource when questions arise regarding internal procedures, processes, and appellate and general counsel matters (e.g., court rules, filing requirements relevant to respective state, federal, and appellate courts, etc.);
- Evaluate and develop support staff procedures with Appellate Staff Manager;
- Serve as administrative support to division management (e.g., draft confidential memos, schedule interviews and calendar meetings, assist with interviews and make recommendations for hiring, etc.);
- Make travel arrangements for division attorneys, including out of state travel, and prepare and submit expense reports for reimbursement;
- Assist the Appellate Staff Manager with matters regarding training, legal and administrative support, and technical issues;
- Assist in the development of legal staff;
- Facilitate the maintenance and repair of equipment;
- Provide back up to support staff when absences necessitate; and
- See assignments through to completion, including special assignments, in a timely manner.
