We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Chemical Separations Group in the Chemical Sciences Division, Physical Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The chosen candidate will be responsible for designing, synthesizing, characterizing, and testing novel organic ligands and functional materials in the separation of cations (e.g., lanthanides) and anions (e.g., PFAS, chromate, arsenate, etc.).
Major Duties/Responsibilities:
- Conduct organic synthesis to prepare organic ligands and materials.
- Perform structural characterization and analysis.
- Evaluate the performance of new ligands/materials in the separation of cations or anions.
- Engage in project meetings and research discussions.
- Present research achievements at national meetings at least twice a year.
- Summarize research findings for publication in scientific literature.

Basic Qualifications:
- A PhD in chemistry or a related field completed within the last 5 years
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with various analytical instruments, such as NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, ICP-OES, ICP-MS, FTIR, UV-Vis, KF titration, BET analysis, and/or TGA, etc.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
- Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.
Applicants cannot have received their Ph.D. more than five years prior to the date of application and must complete all degree requirements before starting their appointment. The appointment length will be for up to 24 months with the potential for extension. Initial appointments and extensions are subject to performance and the availability of funding.
