JOB SUMMARY

This position is for a HIM Analyst/Medical Practice Physician Coder whose responsibility and duties of the HIM Analyst/Medical Practice Coder include the analysis of the outpatient surgical services encounters as well as evaluation and management coding of the surgical professional services. The main duties involve ensuring the documentation supports the facility documentation requirements and the assignment of codes to medical procedures and diagnoses.

Other duties and responsibilities of a Medical Coder include:

• Making sure that codes are assigned correctly and sequenced appropriately as per government and insurance regulations
• Complying with medical coding guidelines and policies
• Receiving and reviewing patients’ charts and documents for verification and accuracy
• Following up and clarifying any information that is not clear to other staff members
• Collecting information made by the Physician from different sources to prepare monthly reports
• Implementing strategic procedures and choosing strategies and evaluation methods that provide correct results
• Examining any medical malpractice that has been reported by analyzing and identifying the medical procedures, diagnoses or events that lead to the negligence
• Ensuring charts and analyzed and completed timely
• Follow up with providers and staff for incomplete or clarification regarding documentation
• Cross training in the vital statics area such as with birth certificates, Release of Information (ROI) and ROI billable.

The position reports to the Director of Health Information Management/Privacy Officer. 

JOB QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum level of Education: High School diploma, GED, or equivalent.

Formal Training: University/college degree preferred, and experience medical records, claims or billing areas is an asset.

Licensure, Certifications & Registration:  RHIT, CCA CRIS, 2 years of college preferred.

Work Experience:  Basic typing and computer skills with previous experience in hospital or medical practice setting, Department of Health Information Management preferred.
