TheMedical Assistant, C ertified performs routine administrative and patientcare supportive duti esin a Health System medical practice that assistmedicaland/or nursing s taffin the examination and treatment ofpatients and ensure the clinic/of fice runs smoothly.


Work Performed

Clinical responsib ilities:The CMA takes medical histories and records vital signs, explain streatment procedures to patients, and prepares patients for examination sand procedures.Patient caresupport responsibilities may include assisti ngthe medicaland nursing staff during examination and procedures, collec ting andpreparing laboratory specimens, performing basic laboratory test in theclinic/office, taking electrocardiograms, removing sutures/ staple s,changing sterile and non-sterile dressings, promoting patient/familyun derstanding of the educational content and his/her involvement in thepla nof care, and documenting in the patient record.Other clinical support r esponsibilities includedisposing ofcontaminated supplies, instrument pro cessing, high level disinfectionand sterilization of medical instruments , telephoning prescriptions to apharmacy, preparing and administering me dications as directed by aphysician, and authorizing drug refills as dir ected. Performs otherclinical functions as delegated and supervised by t he physician.Administrative responsibilities:The CMA greets patients, an swers telephones, schedules appointments toinclude arrive appointments i n MaestroCare, checkoutpatients, andreferral scheduling; arranges for ho spital admissions andlaboratoryservices, updates and files patient medic al records, fills outinsuranceforms, handles billing, bookkeeping to inc lude receiving copays andcollections on account balances; correspondence , and ordering clinicaland clerical supplies and forms. Performs other a dministrative dutiesasdirected.May be requested to be a liaison for clin ic committees.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Good c icactivities suchas JointCommission and falls and/or participate in clin ustomer service skills.Work requires the ability to understand and follo w oral and writteninstructions generally acquired through a high schoole ducation andmedical assistant programming.Heavy lifting and the abilityt o transport stretcher and wheelchairpatients may be required.Working kno wledge of sterile techniques and special procedures that areapplicableto work performed.Working knowledge of procedures and techniques involvedin administeringroutine and special treatments to patients.Working knowled ge of sanitation, personal hygiene and basic health andsafety precaution s applicablefor work in a clinic setting.
