VDOT’s South Hill Residency is excited to announce they are seeking an experienced Operator Maintenance to work with in the Burnt Store Area Headquarters. In this position, you will operate power tools and heavy equipment (chain saws, trimming and chipping machines, dump truck, loader, backhoe, motor grader, tractor with attachments) and perform manual labor.

As an Operator Maintenance, you will:

  • Respond to emergency roadway and severe weather events to prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal and other types of hazardous road conditions.
  • Attend work zone training, prepare work zones and perform traffic control.
  • Demonstrate proper work site protection techniques: identify workplace safety hazards, make suggestions for improvement, wear proper personal protection equipment, maintain current knowledge of safety rules, regulations, laws and use equipment properly and safely.
  • Participate as a working team member performing manual labor including, clearing drainage, cutting brush, pot-hole patching, and fulfilling tasks required to complete road maintenance projects.
  • Complete pre-trip inspections perform preventive maintenance and operate power tools and light to heavy equipment.

Please note:  Additional Transportation Operator II positions may be filled from this applicant pool 90 days upon closing for the other Area Headquarters located at the South Hill Residency. 

VDOT is an emergency response agency and this position is the core of this requirement, therefore you will work outside of normal work hours during emergency operations.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
• Safety shoes required.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter. Must comply with DOT and VDOT policies and standards when operating CDL equipment.
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
