About the Opportunity
About the Opportunity:
We are looking to hire a Post-doctoral Fellow (Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Discovery) in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Bouve College of Health Sciences, Northeastern University, Boston. Thakur Lab has been at the forefront in developing GPCR (cannabinoid receptors 1 and 2) allosteric modulators of the GPCR receptor as well as ligand-gated ion channel for the treatment of several diseases. Such a candidate will support the preclinical drug discovery and development for early-stage therapeutic treatment of neuropathic pain, glaucoma, substance use disorder, epilepsy, and other disorders.
Responsibilities
As a member of this research team, the Research Scientist is expected to execute across all aspects of medicinal chemistry, including:
- Designing, synthesizing, and optimizing molecules targeting GPCRs (cannabinoid receptors; allosteric and orthosteric) and ion channels (α4β2 nAChR, α7nAChR, α9* nAChR, GIRK1/2, GIRK1/4, etc.)
- Conducting biochemical and ADME/PK studies and data analysis
- Generating SAR hypotheses
- Performing empirical and structure-based target design
- Executing synthetic chemistry and troubleshooting
- Improving the potency, efficacy, physicochemical properties, and pharmacokinetics of hit molecules through chemical modification
- Submitting manuscripts, patents, group reports, and grant proposals
- Providing scientific seminars
- Mentoring and assisting junior researchers in the lab
- Supporting certain aspects of lab management
Qualifications
We are seeking a highly motivated and talented Medicinal Chemist with strong technical and problem-solving skills in organic and medicinal chemistry.
- Ph.D. in organic or medicinal chemistry with at least 1–3 years of relevant research experience and strong scientific knowledge
- Broad understanding of GPCR and LGIC signaling, data plotting and interpretation, and ADME
- Experience with LC-MS
- Ability to develop and deliver clear and concise presentations for internal and external meetings
- Strong publication record in synthetic organic and medicinal chemistry
- Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
Preferred:
- Hands-on experience in GPCR signaling assays, electrophysiology assays, and in vitro/in vivo ADME/PK evaluation
- Experience with computational drug discovery
Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities
- Design, synthesize, and optimize molecules targeting GPCRs (cannabinoid receptors; allosteric and orthosteric) and ion channels (α4β2 nAChR, α7nAChR, α9* nAChR, GIRK1/2, GIRK1/4, etc.), including biochemical and ADME/PK studies and data analysis
