About the department
Ensuring the privacy of personal information is core to Cloudflare’s mission to help build a better Internet. We’re looking for an experienced privacy attorney to help Cloudflare navigate the complicated challenges of processing personal data amid an ever-changing regulatory landscape. Our legal team helps the company deal with complex matters by anticipating regulatory changes, and guiding the company around the complications and distractions that arise from such obstacles. Our new privacy counsel team member will help foster our unique corporate philosophy and approach, in which the security and privacy of our customers’ data are paramount. We are looking for an exceptionally talented, energetic and friendly privacy attorney to join our legal team based in San Francisco or Austin. This role is ideal for someone who is a proactive self-starter and strategic thinker, who has a thirst for knowledge and continued growth, all while working as part of a great team. This position reports to Cloudflare’s Chief Privacy Officer.
What you'll do
- Be the subject matter expert on privacy developments and data protection laws impacting global technology companies and work collaboratively across multiple functions, including those in the Asia-Pacific region, to advise on the impact of data protection laws or changes to such laws on Cloudflare’s business. In particular, you will focus on privacy and data protection laws in the U.S. and Asia-Pacific region, but a foundational understanding of the EU’s GDPR is required.
- Be the subject matter expert on Cloudflare’s compliance with “cookie compliance” and “do not sell or share” requirements under U.S. state privacy laws, the ePrivacy Directive, GDPR, and similar national laws.
- Serve as primary privacy counsel to the marketing and sales teams in their outreach to customers and prospective customers and advise on obligations under the US CAN-SPAM and similar national anti-spam laws.
- Collaborate with product lawyers to implement Cloudflare’s Privacy by Design policy as well as evaluating the impact of privacy laws, regulatory guidance, enforcement actions, and other related guidance on product development.
- Support the commercial transactions legal team in negotiating data processing addendums and similar contractual language under GDPR, CCPA, and other global privacy laws.
- Support the People team on matters related to the privacy of employee data.
- Create and contribute to playbooks and FAQ libraries for various teams to ensure they have the most current privacy guidance.
Examples of desirable skills, knowledge and experience
- JD degree with strong academic credentials and admitted to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction
- Minimum 3 years of relevant legal experience counseling a global company on international privacy and data protection issues, preferably with time in-house at a technology company with established privacy compliance protocols
- Expert knowledge of global privacy and data protection laws, regulations and compliance regimes at all levels, including familiarity with industry-specific regimes
- Knowledge of ad tech glossary and privacy practices, including consent management platforms, web tracker analysis, and transparent UI design
- Experience counseling product teams on privacy by design and working with product teams on data privacy and data protection controls
- Solution-oriented business and legal counselor with a growth mindset and strong sense of humor
- Strong communication skills and cooper
