Job Description
Primary Function of Position:
Accessories often serve as the interface between other aspects of the da Vinci system and enable safe and effective robot-assisted surgery. They may be reusable or single-use medical devices (consumables), with yearly volumes in the millions. Our customers interact directly with accessories in every surgical procedure, and they serve a critical role in customer satisfaction and patient outcomes.
The Staff Mechanical Design Engineer will develop and support innovative surgical accessories for the da Vinci Surgical System, from concept to launch and beyond, with shared responsibility and shared reward. The successful candidate will understand user needs and requirements, balance individual product-level requirements with system-level requirements, resolve complex mechanical design issues, and commit to the highest product quality. Projects will include a mix of new product development, product improvements, and sustaining projects to mitigate challenges related to capacity improvements and supply chain. Responsibilities include developing, documenting, and validating new product designs, as well as improving existing designs to meet the needs of our customers.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Serve as lead technical designer on cross-functional project teams to develop new, world-class surgical accessories
- Translate clinical requirements and user needs to functional and technical specifications.
- Create intellectual property by brainstorming novel concepts, writing invention disclosures, and creating rapid prototypes.
- Perform risk analyses; develop design requirements; prototype, document, test and iterate designs according to corporate standard and departmental operating procedures, including stringent Design Control activities.
- Create and maintain engineering drawings to company and international drafting standards.
- Support the quality and regulatory processes.
- Contribute to the determination of future product release content.
- Design, develop and document components and assemblies for surgical system accessories
- Create product functional and design specifications.
- Create, analyze, and test product designs and their components.
- Research, understand and design to relevant product specific standards
- Develop, implement, test, and document solutions that meet clinical, functional and product requirements.
- Develop and collaborate on verification testing.
- Help develop initial fixtures and assembly processes in collaboration with manufacturing and automation teams.
- Designing for manufacturing and automation, sterilization processes and biocompatibility.
- Provide mechanical engineering sustaining support for resolution of manufacturing and field issues
- Assess field reliability data and improve existing product designs as necessary.
- Support production of final product by troubleshooting process and component problems.
- Investigate and determine root cause of quality, manufacturing, or material defects.
- Provide technical advice and mentoring to other mechanical engineers.
