Project/Unit Description

The Self Protection Systems Branch is part of the Electromagnetic Warfare and Survivability Modeling and Simulation (EWSMS) Division under GTRI’s Electro-Optical Systems Lab (EOSL). The Self Protection Systems Branch conducts analysis of system-level self-protection capabilities, including high fidelity modeling of threat capabilities as well as prediction of flare, jammer, and other countermeasure performance. Capabilities include:
- The development, optimization, and effectiveness evaluation of IR and RF countermeasures and how they are employed
- IR signature testing, measurement, and modeling
- Thought leadership in the EO/IR community, including EO/IR training, education, and government white hat functions

EWSMS provides modeling, simulation, and analysis of platform and system effectiveness and survivability in one-on-one, few-on-few, and many-on-many scenarios, as well as comprehensive kill chain analysis.

Job Purpose

Lead multiple sponsored research projects. Manage Branch (7-15 FTE) administrative activities including hiring, appraisals and sponsored project success.

Key Responsibilities

• Develops and executes plans for the growth and sustainment of the branch that achieves EWSMS, EOSL and GTRI goals and objectives
• Execute internal research that focuses on branch, division, lab and corporate strategic areas and develop long term personnel plans to meet objectives
• Engage with other branches and divisions in internal marketing of branch capabilities
• Develop and submit white-papers and proposals to support program development
• Conduct performance evaluations for branch personnel
• Perform mentoring, coaching and training of branch members in technical and other areas
• Conduct recruitment, hiring, termination, and administration of personnel
• Oversee administration of personnel programs including security, ethics & compliance, pay & benefits
• Monitor projects and tasks executed within the branch, engaging outside the branch as required
• Conduct manpower planning for branch programs, projects and tasks
• Provide leadership of internal programs, projects, and tasks to include management of branch overhead budgets and spending
• Communicate branch plans and progress to division and lab management
• Support project directors in division Monthly Project Status Reviews (MPSRs)
• Coordinate with division & lab management, computer support, sponsored research support, lab operations, facilities, communications, research security, human resources and other support organizations
• Represent the division and laboratory as a subject matter expert at consortiums, symposiums, and expositions
• Develop physics-based models of EO/IR and RF systems and countermeasures to evaluate and optimize their effectiveness in operational scenarios
• Run simulations and algorithm optimizations
• Collaborate with project team members and project sponsors to specify technical requirements, schedules, and program risk analysis
• Assist in the design, development, and demonstration of EW simulation experiments
