Lead Groundsworker (Lead Groundsworker - Facilities Management, Grounds)

Job Summary:

Under general supervision, the Lead Irrigation Groundsworker provides lead work direction in maintenance of the campus irrigation system and grounds work. Plan, train, coordinate, and inspect the work of others.

Responsibilities:

• Leads Irrigation Specialists in the maintenance of the campus irrigation system, as well as providing increased irrigation specialized skills. Assign, lead, and participate in the daily activities of performing irrigation and grounds work. Maintains and repairs irrigation systems including, but not limited to, lines, sprinklers, valves and controllers. Makes modifications as directed. Operates various testing devices related to irrigation systems and backflows. Uses other grounds and irrigation tools and equipment. Maintain as accurate inventory of all grounds and irrigation materials, supplies and tools under their care. Prepares cost estimates and plans for installation of new systems and modification of existing systems. Able to read and follow specifications and working drawings. Prepares reports as required. Works under the campus work order system in testing and maintaining the total campus irrigation systems. Reports in writing to supervisor and FSC on modifications to campus irrigation system. Record changes on “As Built” drawings. Service and makes minor repairs on grounds tools and equipment.
• Perform routine inspections of the work assigned to crews for accuracy ensuring it has been completed in a timely manner. Provide documentation of those routine inspections to the Landscape and Fleet Manager. Assist the Landscape and Fleet Manager with annual evaluation of the crew. All evaluations are to be based solely upon the individuals attitude, initiative and ability.
• In coordination with the Landscape and Fleet Manager, establish priorities, set standards of quality for the campus and evaluate work needed for irrigation, planting, turf and shrub care campus wide. Show knowledge and ability to properly plant and care for all types of turf, plants, and trees for our planting zone. Demonstrate the ability to evaluate the work needs for your area and to follow through on the priorities to accomplish accepted standards of quality.
•  Train new employees, conduct ongoing training sessions for permanent employees and operate equipment such as trenches, backhoe, pumps, etc. Direct staff in proper operational procedures. During inclement weather, conduct in-house training for crew on equipment operation, safety practices and work techniques. Hands-on training of riding equipment to be preceded by operating demonstration by lead worker or appropriate operator.
•  Informs the appropriate utility agency or entity before digging when necessary. Provide other classification-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience

• Two years of experience in planting, cultivating and maintaining flowers and shrubs, or in general grounds maintenance work.

Required Qualifications

Knowledge and Abilities:

Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, and tools and equipment used in planting, cultivating, and caring for flowers, shrubs, lawns, and trees. General knowledge of common plant diseases, pests, and weeds; approved methods and materials used in their control and eradication, horticultural methods and materials; and planting and growing requirements of plants commonly grown in California.
Ability to lay out, coordinate, and oversee the work of others; provide training, interpret policies and explain methods and procedures; inspect and evaluate the work of others; read and write at a level appropriate to the duties of the position; and perform general gardening and grounds maintenance work.

Preferred Qualifications

- Two-year’s journeyman experience in landscape, grounds maintenance, and irrigation systems works.
- Knowledge of proper care and irrigation of plants and trees including equipment and tools used.
- Advanced knowledge of irrigation systems and automatic and computer irrigation controllers.
- Plant-Water-Soil relationships.
- Ability to plan and coordinate the work of others; provide training as needed.
- Read and write at the level appropriate to the duties of this position.

Compensation and Benefits:

Anticipated Salary Step Placement: $3, 890.00 - $4, 468.00 per month (Step 1 - Step 8) 

Classification Salary Steps: $3, 890.00 - $5, 555.00 per month (Step 1 - Step 19)
