Equitable is looking for a Medical Director supporting Life Underwriting to join our team. Full time physician (MD or DO) needed, with primary responsibility to support the life underwriting function in the area of medical risk evaluation. The Medical Director, Life Underwriting can work remotely from a home-based office.

Key Job Responsibilities

In alignment with corporate goals, specific responsibilities will include:

  • Review underwriting cases/applications and provide medical opinions regarding morbidity and mortality risk, including cases involving complex medical history
  • Review and interpret medical tests
  • Provide underwriter training, development and skills assessment
  • Maintain current knowledge of medicine and industry underwriting practices to advance a competitive underwriting posture
  • Assist in selection and development of life underwriting manual guidelines
  • Serve as a subject matter expert for Equitable's corporate wellness initiative, helping to create and execute programs that are designed to foster a healthy, engaged and productive workforce


  • The base salary range for this position is $200,000 - $250,000. Actual base salaries vary based on skills, experience, and geographical location. In addition to base pay, Equitable provides compensation to reward performance with base salary increases, spot bonuses, and short-term incentive compensation opportunities. Eligibility for these programs depends on level and functional area of responsibility.

    Required Qualifications

    • Medical degree (M.D. or D.O.) along with currently active medical license in state of residence or practice
    • 2 years of professional experience working with life insurance products or life insurance underwriting within insurance industry
    • 5 years of clinical medical experience
    • Board certification in clinical specialty
    • Board certified in insurance medicine or progressing to it

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Strong communication and decision-making skills
    • Familiarity and ability to work with Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
    • Leading and/or consulting on corporate wellness initiatives

    Skills

    Communicating Complex Concepts: Knowledge of effective presentation tools and techniques to ensure clear understanding; ability to use summarization and simplification techniques to explain complex technical concepts in simple, clear language appropriate to the audience.

    Decision Making and Critical Thinking: Knowledge of the decision-making process and associated tools and techniques; ability to accurately analyze situations and reach productive decisions based on informed judgment.

    Insurance Legal and Regulatory Environment: Knowledge of federal, state and local laws and regulations; ability to comply with these laws and regulations in insurance industry practices and activities.

    Knowledge of Reinsurance: Knowledge of reinsurance activities, processes, tools, and considerations; ability to implement all reinsurance practices following all standards, applicable laws and regulations.

    Knowledge of Underwriting: Knowledge of the full spectrum of underwriting activities, practices, tools and considerations; ability to utilize underwriting knowledge to implement, manage and improve the underwriting process.

    Life Insurance: Knowledge of life insurance products, market segments and marketplaces; ability to apply knowledge of life insurance products, market segments and marketplaces to meet business goals and objectives.

    Life Insurance Programs: Knowledge of features, policies and processes of life insurance programs; ability to implement and manage existing and future employee life insurance plans and programs, processes, issues and considerations.
