The Opportunity 

We are currently seeking an experienced senior manager to join our Public Affairs team in Lake Bluff, IL. The Public Affairs team has global responsibility for public relations and communications activities for Abbott’s nutrition business.

The ideal candidate is a strong and passionate storyteller in nutrition, science, and health, and has a proven-track record of top-tier media placements, developing compelling messaging and PR content, building thought leadership, providing executive communications guidance, creating strategic communications, and managing issues. The candidate will be self-motivated and nimble, thrive in a fast-paced dynamic environment, and have experience in supporting and executing successful PR and communications programs in many countries around the world.

This position works with a broad range of internal and external stakeholders across all levels of management and functions at both the corporate and division level, including R&D, marketing, legal, regulatory affairs, operations, quality, HR, government affairs, and finance. The senior manager also maintains budget responsibility for PR programming within their scope of work at the division level. The position will report directly to the Director, International Public Affairs for Abbott’s nutrition business. All division Public Affairs functions have a line reporting relationship to Corporate Public Affairs.

What You’ll Work On

  • Work closely with Director, Public Affairs to set and drive global PR strategy and storytelling for Abbott's international nutrition business.
  • Collaborate with international Public Affairs colleagues on the development and execution of external public relations strategies and approaches for key product launches, key clinical and real-world data, product awareness programs/outreach and influencer programming.
  • Manage and execute global, integrated, insights-led campaigns that help maintain and enhance Abbott as a leader in nutrition. 
  • Interface with R&D nutrition scientists to identify science storytelling opportunities to demonstrate the impact of nutrition and/or Abbott’s products on people’s health; lead science storytelling PR efforts in nutrition globally.
  • Work with top-tier business, science, health and consumer reporters (both proactively and reactively) to enhance and protect the company's reputation as well as advance business objectives.
  • Develop strategy, plans and provide strategic counsel to business leaders and key stakeholders across the business.
  • Develop multimedia, content and social and digital strategies to complement key PR campaigns. Bring to the table an understanding of today's communications environment amongst earned, owned, social and paid media.
  • In partnership with marketing colleagues, review and approve strategy for influencer and social media programs outside the U.S.
  • Oversee development of messages, press materials and other communications tools.
  • Anticipate and prepare for reputation/business impacts and work with appropriate functions to influence the business decision-making process.
  • Keep a pulse on today's communications environment and apply those learnings to strategic plans and execution.
  • Media train and coach business leaders and spokespeople on delivery of key messages.
  • Set metrics to measure effectiveness of public relations and communication efforts.
