About the role
Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) has the fastest, lowest cost path to commercial fusion energy.
CFS collaborates with MIT to leverage decades of research combined with groundbreaking new high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. HTS magnets will enable compact fusion power plants that can be constructed faster and at lower cost. Our mission is to deploy these power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as fast as possible. To that end, CFS has assembled a team of leaders in tough tech, fusion science, and manufacturing with a track record of rapid execution. Supported by the world’s leading investors, CFS is uniquely positioned to deliver limitless, clean, fusion power to combat climate change. To implement this plan, we are looking to add dedicated people to the team who treat people well, improve our work by adding multifaceted perspectives and new ways of solving problems, have achieved outstanding results through a range of pursuits, and have skills and experience related to this role.
CFS is looking for a Senior People Operations Business Partner that will form close working relationships with key functions, support employees, and drive talent strategy. This individual will be working to support functions located our Miltipas, California office location.

CFS is looking for a Senior People Operations Business Partner that will form close working relationships with key functions, support employees, and drive talent strategy. This individual will be working to support functions located our Miltipas, California office location.
This team member will:
- Develop a close working relationship and high level of trust with assigned organizations
- Assist in the development and roll out of an organizational structure with associated job levels and titles that supports business objectives
- Work with leaders to develop clear career paths for employees
- Work with leaders to identify key skill gaps to fill through hiring
- Carry out succession planning and ensure robust pipelines for key roles
- Partner with leaders on talent development and employee status changes
- Hold talent reviews and help identify stretch and training assignments for promising employees
- Partner with leaders on compensation decisions during offer, internal moves, and related to retention
- Apply practices around employee feedback and annual compensation reviews
- Assist in the development and evolution of HR policies as the company grows and changes
- Resolve employee relations cases as needed
- Championing the CFS culture, values, and mission
- Champion diversity
The ideal candidate will have most, if not all, of these requirements:
- 5+ years of experience
- Familiarity with general policies regarding non-exempt employees in CA
- Proven ability to help leaders meet business objectives
- Proven ability to coach leaders through company growth and changes
- Proven success working with highly technical leaders, engineers, and scientists
- Impeccable ethics and discretion
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to comfortably navigate uncertainty and develop creative solutions to issues
- Ability to be on site at our Milpitas, CA office location 2-3 days a week
Additional experience and/or qualifications:
- Experience with in a face pace high growth start up
- Ability to perform activities such as sitting and typing for extending periods of time
- Willingness to travel rarely when needed
- Work in a facility that contains industrial hazards including heat, cold, noise, fumes, strong magnets, lead (Pb), high voltage, high current, pressure systems, and cryogenics
