We’re actively seeking a talented Director & Actuary to join our Life & Annuities Experience Studies team in Newport Beach, CA; Omaha, NE, or Lynchburg, VA. This role can be on-site, on a hybrid schedule, or 100% remote for the right candidate (depending on location).

As a Director, you’ll play a key role in Pacific Life’s growth and long-term success by leading a team of actuaries as well as enhancing our predictive analytics capabilities throughout the product life cycle. You will be directly managing a small number of individuals on the Experience Studies team within the Consumer Markets Division (CMD) Finance, Risk & Actuarial department.

How you'll help move us forward:

  • Prioritize modernization efforts by integrating emerging tools and analysis techniques such as predictive analytics, artificial intelligence, and machine learning into the development of experience studies.

  • Build strong relationships with key areas (Underwriting, Reinsurance, etc.) to appropriately set assumptions that can be successfully implemented. Oversee assumption governance process and understand downstream impacts to pricing, valuation, reinsurance, modeling, etc.

  • Implement control best practices on mortality experience studies. Ensure proper documentation of methodologies, assumptions, code, and results to support transparency and reproducibility.

  • Create Tableau dashboards at the right granularity to report key insights and emerging trends to senior management. Implement process improvements, automation, and efficiencies where applicable.

  • Work with external consultants to gather external industry data in order to validate assumptions and benchmark against competitors.

  • Provide leadership, guidance, and effective coaching to help develop a team of actuaries.

  • Foster collaboration, manage expectations, and effectively communicate project updates, milestones, and risks.

The experience you will bring:

  • Has an FSA designation.

  • Excellent written/verbal communication and leadership skills. Ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner to various audiences, including senior management.

  • Strong organizational, time management, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.

What will make you stand out:

  • Previous management experience with a small team.

  • 10+ years of experience with a heavy focus on mortality (building base tables).

  • Working knowledge of life & annuity insurance products along with experience studies.

  • Experience working with large data sets and data visualization software (e.g. Tableau, Alteryx).
