Job Description

Cardiographic Technician must prepare the patient for the stress test, including but not limited to monitoring blood pressure and properly placing electrodes for 12-lead monitoring. Cardiographic Technician will assist in all exercise and pharmacological stress tests in the Cardiovascular Lab and Nuclear Medicine. Technician maintains appropriate supplies/materials needed to conduct stress tests properly and safely.

Duties include, but are not limited to:
Prepares patients for stress testing and assists supervisor with test following established procedures: Verifies the test is ordered and explains procedure to patient. Gives necessary instruction; obtains signed consent. Identifies requesting and interpreting physician. Records diagnostic-quality EKG including proper placement of electrodes. Recognizes serious arrhythmias during recording and notifies nurse, physician or supervisor. Assists test supervisor in observing monitors and patient during testing. Maintains accurate and complete documentation of test data. Verifies availability of emergency equipment. Assists in monitoring of patient status during treadmill and pharmacological stress tests in CV Lab and Nuclear Medicine. Performs stress monitoring of heart rate and blood pressure during treadmill and pharmacology testing with nuclear cardiac tests and echocardiography tests. Cleans and maintains equipment following established procedure. Successfully completed basic/advanced arrhythmia course.

Performs EKGs and attaches holter monitors following established procedure. Scans holter tapes using computer-assisted analyzer and documents findings for physician review: Verifies the test is ordered and explains procedure to patient. Identifies requesting and interpreting physician. Records diagnostic- quality EKG including proper placement of electrodes. Recognizes serious arrhythmias during recording and notifies nurse, physician or supervisor. Completes clerical functions by pulling patient’s previous EKG’s and placing in physician box for interpretation. Results/edits EKGs in EKG computer and hospital computer system. Copies, distributes and files EKGs after interpretation is complete. Recognizes serious arrhythmia during halter monitor attachment and notifies supervisor or physician. Properly scans, edits and completes patient documentation of halter monitor and reports findings to follow established procedure. Cleans and maintains equipment following established procedure.

Completes required hours of continuing education, meets attendance and punctuality requirements: Meets required continuing education including CV Lab staff meetings and other approved seminars. Completes annual recertification in: Department Mandatory Requirements, Advanced Life Support (ALS), Fire Safety, Back Care, Infection Control. Meets punctuality and attendance standards as stated in VHS Human Resources policies. Assists in the education/training of EKG staff.

Other performance requirements: Communicates effectively with patients, other employees and physicians. Keeps work areas neat and clean. Equipment is stored in designated areas and traffic corridors are kept free from obstruction. Hospital resources – time and materials – are used efficiently and responsibly. Willing to perform other duties as requested by supervisor or department directors when needed. Reports to Clinical Manager – operations and scheduling.

Education

High School Diploma or GED required.

Successful completion of EKG, pharmacology, and cardiac rhythm courses within six month of hire date required.

Certification & Licensure

Certified Cardiographic Technician (CCT) by Cardiovascular Credential International required or obtained within 18 months of hire.

BLS Certification (Basic Life Support) - American Heart ‘Healthcare Provider’ (HCP) - AHA approved required. New hires must have American Heart Association (AHA) appropriate certification prior to completion of orientation.

Qualifications

Ability to function in a hospital environment and learn skills required to perform prescribed tests on patients of all ages including the neonate, child, adolescent and geriatric patient required.

Communication skills necessary to relate to physicians, peers and patients on a professional and technical level required Ability to respond appropriately under stress required.

Ability to work independently and as a team member required.
