MCFR Radiochemistry Intern

TerraPower, LLC. Is seeking a highly motivated Radiochemistry Intern to assist in chemical analysis and electroanalytical chemistry of molten chloride salts. Research will be performed on radioelement compound synthesis and characterization, material interactions, redox properties, or chemical separations. The candidate should be an undergraduate or graduate student with an emphasis on chemistry.  Knowledge of radiochemistry and nuclear chemistry is desirable.  An understanding of electrochemical instrumentation such as potentiostats, galvanostats, probes, and sensors is preferred.  Experience with molten salts is desired, but not critical.  The candidate should have laboratory experience in the manipulation, synthesis, characterization, or separation of radioactive compounds.  Previous experience with radiochemistry laboratory protocols and glovebox manipulations is highly desired. The candidate should be able to develop and plan experiments to achieve specified goals using existing infrastructure. It is essential for the candidate to evaluate literature results and computational analysis to further research goals. The candidate must be capable of working closely with a focused and high achieving group, working with minimal day-to-day supervision.

Responsibilities

  • Actively participate in ongoing studies involving radioelements
  • Propose, develop, and conduct experiments, along with completing technical studies under supervision of radiochemistry researchers. 
  • Measure electrochemical properties of molten salts
  • Assist in laboratory development and organization
  • Maintain laboratory organization and operations 
  • Provide assistance in the development and implementation of laboratory procedures

 

Key Qualifications and Skills

  • Laboratory experience in radiochemistry and chemical synthesis
  • Experience with FactSage is desirable
  • Knowledge of the nuclear fuel cycle, nuclear forensics, and applications of radionuclides
  • Excellence in written and oral communication
  • Ability to work as part of a team
