Senior Engineering Manager

Careers That Change Lives

At Medtronic, we push the limits of what technology can do to make tomorrow better than yesterday and that makes it an exciting and rewarding place to work. We value what makes you unique. Be a part of a company that thinks differently to solve problems, make progress, and deliver meaningful innovations.

Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) offers devices and therapies to treat abnormal heart rhythms, as well as cardiac diagnostic and monitoring solutions. This position reports into the Instruments HW Released Product Engineering group (RPE, a.k.a. continuation engineering, sustaining engineering, product support), which is part of CRM’s Patient Care Systems (PCS) organization. Instruments HW RPE participates in several cross functional teams for market released external medical instrumentation products. Cross functional project teams include members from external suppliers/manufacturers, Business Product Ownership, Development, Manufacturing, Sourcing, Operations, Supplier Quality Engineering, Quality, Reliability, Regulatory, Compliance, and Service functions. The group’s primary objective is to provide the design expertise necessary to support continuity of quality and compliant products globally.

This position is in Mounds View, MN. within the Cardiac Rhythm Management (CRM) operating unit. At Medtronic, we bring bold ideas forward with speed and decisiveness to put patients first in everything we do. In-person exchanges are invaluable to our work. We are working on-site 4 days per week as part of our commitment to fostering a culture of professional growth and cross-functional collaboration as we work together to engineer the extraordinary. This role will require less than 10% of travel to enhance collaboration and ensure successful completion of projects.

We believe that when people from different cultures, genders, and points of view come together, innovation is the result —and everyone wins. Medtronic walks the walk, creating an inclusive culture where you can thrive.

A Day in the Life

This role of Senior Engineering Manager is expected to have responsibilities in both project management and people management, as well as individual contributions as an SME.  The broad, collective responsibilities for this role include but are not limited to the following:

  • Lead the resolution of post market issues that are larger in scale or complexity requiring a more focused coordination of the team.  Issues could include design changes, product reliability issues, regulatory inquiries, and CAPA ownership.
  • Issues are often reactive, urgent, complex, and poorly defined.  Priorities change frequently, and issues must be resolved promptly. Leverage network of expertise and learn quickly to drive the desired outcome in an efficient manner.
  • Manage business and/or operations prioritized initiatives through cross-functional teams per committed schedule, budget, and outcomes.
  • Mentoring, managing performance, and developing talent, engagement and inclusion for engineering staff.
  • Drive alignment within leadership regarding recommended strategies, goals, and plans for the group as well as driving consistency in rolling them out to the group.
  • Represent the organization while influencing across functions and businesses by balancing divergent objectives to gain cooperation of other parties.
  • Find solutions to roadblocks and inefficiencies identified by the group during execution and seek out systemic opportunities for improvement.
  • The group isn’t successful in execution unless the whole cross functional team is successful in execution.  Look for things we can control, contribute to, or influence that makes cross functional team members more effective in their roles, and strive to build partnerships resulting in better outcomes.
  • Represent the organization as an SME in regulations and standards.  Successfully defend Medtronic compliance and/or present pragmatic solutions to regulators and internal stakeholders when challenges and inquiries are presented.  Support and manage various initiatives around evolving standards and regulations, such as IEC 60601-1, RoHS, and EU MDR.
  • Represent the organization in communicating detailed technical information to both technical and nontechnical audiences within Medtronic and Medtronic’s suppliers and regulators.
