Job Summary

 

The Frances Willson Thompson Library and Genesee Historical Collections Center seek an Assistant or Associate Librarian for Research and Scholarship to join a community of information professionals dedicated to empowering intellectual and personal growth through access to diverse resources and a welcoming, student-centered environment. The Assistant or Associate Librarian for Research and Scholarship provides assistance and instruction services to students, faculty, staff, and others in support of coursework, research, scholarship, and general inquiry, with a particular focus on the College of Innovation and Technology. In collaboration with colleagues, the person in this position will develop relationships with colleges and schools, academic departments, academic support units, and other research and scholarship-intensive units at UM-Flint, create online content, and provide research assistance, specialized research support services, instruction, workshops, and seminars in online and in-person formats.

 

Responsibilities

 

Provide library services to students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community users, in-person and online 

  • Assist library users with access to library resources;
  • Provide in-depth consultation; and,
  • Answer reference and research queries; and
  • Create content for the library’s website and other online spaces.

Provide specialized research support services to students and faculty engaged in research and scholarship 

  • Assist students and faculty in finding and using library resources, including methods, datasets, and citation management tools;
  • Assist grant seekers in finding appropriate grant opportunities; and
  • Assist grant awardees in developing and executing data management plans.

Develop, plan, and lead collaborative services and programs 

  • Maintain relationships with UM colleagues engaged in supporting research and scholarship;
  • Explore and employ creative outreach approaches to expand research and scholarship services; and
  • Share program opportunities and lead programs, individually or in collaboration with other units.

Engage in service activities 

  • Participate in library committees and teams
  • Participate in University committees and teams
  • Participate in relevant professional committees and organizations at the local, regional and/or national level

Engage in professional development and scholarship activities 

  • Attend relevant webinars, training sessions, and conferences
  • Explore opportunities for presentation and writing for publication

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Earned Master of Library and Information Science degree by July 1, 2025 from an ALA-accredited program, or equivalent degree
  • Strong service and outreach orientation and ability to make connections and work effectiv
