Neptune Medical is an innovative, venture capital funded medical device startup headquartered in Burlingame, CA. We have already commercialized novel medical devices using our technology. TITLE: Managing Principal Mechanical Engineer, Instruments and Composites

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Managing Principal Mechanical Engineer, Instruments and Composites will play a central role in the system architecture and core design of our robotics products. Candidates will have made strong contributions from early-stage ideation to product release. The ideal candidate will also be comfortable in a mentorship role. This is our highest technical level at Neptune medical and a chance to apply your skills to the development of a truly new robotic medical platform.

The ideal candidate will act with passion and intensity in a medical device start-up that is fast paced and collaborative and will display the ability to perform to the requirements outlined below. ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Solve tricky engineering problems through foundational invention and subsequent iteration and prototyping.
  • Generate novel ideas that strengthen the company’s intellectual property position in the fields of endoscopic robotics and minimally invasive surgery.
  • Bring both an experimental and analytical approach to your work while creating specific designs for the use of our composite technology in our robotic application.
  • Work with typical and new catheter/endoscope technologies:
    • Coiling, braiding and laser cut hypotubes
    • Extrusions and films
    • Steering/bending sections
    • Thermal and adhesive bonds
    • Coatings
  • Participate in the development of specifications, test methods and protocols to ensure the functionality, safety and efficacy of medical devices in accordance with medical device regulations and design controls.
  • Lead assessments and make recommendations for solving challenging design problems at both the component and system levels, via inspection, testing, analysis, and experimentation.
  • Be a mentor to younger engineers.
  • Be a technical leader on key projects.
  • Significant hands-on building and testing of multiple generations of prototypes.
  • Use DFM principles to reduce cost and simplify assembly.
  • Work closely with vendors.
  • Interact with physicians and users in order to verify and validate assumptions and further converge on proper product definition.
  • Create and maintain Solidworks CAD models and detailed drawings.
  • Lead technical design reviews. Present design inputs, design outputs and open issues.
  • Be able to both collaborate closely and show a high degree of self-direction.

 REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • B.S. M.S. or PHD in Mechanical Engineering or related.
  • 12+ years of work experience as a hands-on engineer.
  • Demonstrated experience working with cross functional teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to generate original ideas by history of patents and IP.
  • A driven outlook and with a strong desire to succeed as an engineer, as a team, and as a company.
  • An inventive aptitude balanced with discipline and detail-orientation.
  • Experience with medical device manufacturing.
  • Great understanding of design controls and what is needed to get a product into patients.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience with composite structures, both experimentally and analytically.
  • Experience with development of articulating endoscopes and catheters.
  • Developed products from invention to market release.
  • Experience in a start-up environment.
  • Proficient with SolidWorks.
  • Experience creating and managing schedules, budgets, and plans.
  • Made significant contributions to an IP portfolio: Cite pending or issued patents.

Our job titles may span more than one career level. The starting base salary for this role is between $240,000 and $290,000 depending on experience. The actual base pay is dependent upon many factors, such as: education, training, transferable skills, work experience, business needs, and location.
