The Industrial Design Programs at Thomas Jefferson University, together with the College of Architecture, Design and Engineering (CADE), invite applications for a full-time, 9-month, Visiting Assistant Professor in industrial design beginning in Fall 2026. This is a one-year, closed-end appointment.

We seek a colleague who approaches industrial design as a profession based in integration of technology, human needs, and aesthetics, and whose practice is diverse enough to successfully teach the diversity of projects found in undergraduate capstone-year courses. The candidate is expected to teach Senior Capstone (Design 7 and 8), as well as Ergonomic Studies and Materials and Processes for Manufacturing courses offered at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

About the Position:

The primary responsibilities for this position are:

Teaching comprehensive design process, from research through manufacturability and portfolio, in undergraduate capstone studios.

Integrating and conveying the design value in technical elements of design, including cognitive and physical ergonomics and understanding the influence of available materials and processes on part design and manufacturing implementation.

While technical competency is expected, this is not an engineering position. We welcome applicants from design practice.

Qualifications:
 

Required:
 

A professional bachelor’s degree in industrial design.

Demonstrated expertise in technical and comprehensive industrial design and product development.
Teaching experience and/or significant professional experience relevant to the position.

Strong communication and collaborative skills.
 

Preferred:
 

Experience teaching integrated design studios and technical industrial design courses

Evidence of design excellence, professional practice, research, or shipped work

Interest in interdisciplinary and practice-based education

Experience integrating digital tools, fabrication, and visualization into teaching

A portfolio of scholarly inquiry and/or outstanding design work is required, and a trajectory of critical inquiry aligned with the program’s design approach and core values is highly desired. Candidates should have demonstrated successful collaboration and innovation in teaching or practice and must be qualified by education and experience to teach at the undergraduate and graduate level.
