Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Health Professions (DHP) mission is to ensure safe and competent patient care by licensing health professionals, enforcing standards of practice, and providing information to health care practitioners and the public.

The Discipline Case Specialist for the Board of Medicine provides comprehensive support regarding the receipt and distribution of investigative reports, direction of interested parties to rules and regulations as it relates to discipline. This position provides administrative support related to the adjudication of Formal Hearings for the Board of Medicine, and administrative Credentials Proceedings for the Board of Medicine, effectively coordinating with all interested parties. In addition, the Discipline Case Specialist assists in the absence of the Administrative Assistant. Other duties include responding to inquiries from the Administrative Proceedings Division as well as the general public and prepares cases for the Senior Assistant Attorney General for the Board of Medicine in response to circuit court appeals.

Minimum Qualifications

- Experience working within a regulatory office environment.
- Considerable knowledge of office procedures and practices, including confidential electronic/hard copy file
maintenance is required.
- General knowledge of licensing principles and practices within a regulatory office environment.
- Demonstrated ability or the ability to develop a comprehensive knowledge of state laws, regulations and policies pertaining to licensing, discipline or regulation of professions.
- Ability to apply this information in response to customer contacts, via phone or written correspondence.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with stakeholders and/or Board members, internal and external customers.
- Ability to problem solve, work independently and research relevant documentation to ensure quality service.
- Strong Word processing skills and proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite.
- Demonstrated ability to independently organize and prioritize workflow in a fast-paced, customer service oriented environment.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to work cooperatively with others in a team environment.
- Demonstrated knowledge of FOIA and the Administrative Process Act (APA).
- Considerable knowledge of administrative procedures/practices, for the conduction of public business and meetings, to include the ability to promptly identity and resolve issues.
- Demonstrated ability prioritizing and tracking deadlines and ensuring that all correspondence is prepared and disseminated in a timely fashion.
- Demonstrated experience in taking/preparing meeting minutes, preparing official and or legal documents, and in maintaining confidential records.

Additional Considerations

Background in public administration, legal, health care or related field.
- Knowledge of licensure database.
