Senior Water Infrastructure Engineer - Dams & Water Systems (Engineer IV)

Are you a seasoned civil or structural engineer with a passion for water infrastructure and dam safety? Join Colorado Springs Utilities as a Senior Water Infrastructure Engineer (Engineer IV) and play a critical role in ensuring the reliability and safety of our community’s water systems. You’ll lead and participate in efforts to assess, maintain, and improve key assets such as dams, pump stations, pipelines, and storage facilities.

As a senior member of the Operations Engineering Group, you will:

  • Lead condition assessment and asset management programs for critical water infrastructure, including dams, embankments, spillways, conduits, storage facilities and pump stations
  • Serve as a technical expert in dam safety, hydrology/hydraulics, and regulatory compliance while assisting the Chief Dam Safety Engineer (CDSE)
  • Participate in the development and management of rehabilitation, repair, and replacement projects from concept through execution
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external consultants to ensure high-quality project delivery
  • Support emergency action planning and operational strategies for water systems
  • Apply knowledge of Colorado State Engineer’s Dam Safety Rules and FERC regulations in coordination with the CDSEProvide mentorship and technical guidance to junior engineers and support staff
     

Key Focus Areas:

  • Champion a world-class safety culture across all engineering activities
  • Draft scopes of work and review technical submittals for condition assessment and sustainment projects
  • Coordinate with planning and delivery teams to prioritize and implement capital and maintenance projects]Contribute to the development of policies, standards, and long-term infrastructure strategies
  • Utilize decision analysis tools to support asset management and investment planning
     

Who You Are:

  • Strong collaborator who is open to the sharing of knowledge and technical growth of team and internal customers
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil, Structural, or related Engineering field from an ABET-accredited university is REQUIRED 
  • Solid, demonstrated hands-on progressive engineering experience, with a strong focus on dams, water infrastructure, and asset management
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license required or ability to obtain within 3 months
  • Skills:
    • Deep understanding of dam safety, hydrology/hydraulics, and water infrastructure systems
    • Strong analytical, communication, and project management skills
    • Proficiency in Microsoft Office; AutoCAD or GIS experience is a plus
    • Ability to work in both office and field environments, including remote watershed locations
    • Strong public speaking skills and the ability to teach workshops related to dams, emergency response, water systems and related critical infrastructure
  • Additional Requirements:
    • A valid unrestricted driver’s license and ability to travel to remote sites is required for this role
    • Willingness to work independently and collaboratively across multiple teams
    • Commitment to public service and infrastructure resilience
